NAB has stepped up its fight against fraud by joining a customer education push backed by peak bodies and regulators.
In addition to NAB's Internet alerts advising customers how to best protect and safeguard against fraud, NAB has joined forces with the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce's (ACFT) Scamwatch campaign.
NAB's Head of Internet Banking, Ean Van Vuuren, said security of information was one of the top concerns for customers using internet banking.
"To combat internet fraud, NAB urges all Internet banking customers to register and use its SMS security service which sends a unique code via SMS to a customer's mobile phone when authorising online payments." he said.
"With some 95% of Australians using mobile phones, NAB's SMS security is a convenient and fast option to enhance internet banking security. Importantly, no customer that has registered for NAB's SMS security has experienced fraud since it was made available to customers in May 2005."
HOW NAB'S SMS security SERVICE WORKS
- A randomly generated, one time only code is sent via SMS to a customer's mobile phone when authorising online payments .
- Customers enter the unique code into the payment confirmation screen to complete the payment. Transactions won't go through until the customer enters the SMS code.
- SMS security is available free of charge to all registered National Internet banking customers. More information is available at nab.com.au/security
- Customers can register their mobile phone for NAB's SMS security service by calling the Internet Banking Support Team on 1300 651 656 or international on +61 3 8641 9886.
Some tips to protect your financial identity:
1. Don't provide your PIN or Internet banking password to anyone if asked
2. Delete spam and scam email - if the offer sounds too good to be true - it probably is
3. Keep your anti-virus and firewall software up-to-date
4. Don't use public computers for Internet banking eg. Internet cafes, libraries or hotels
The ACFT was established in March 2005 and comprises 18 government regulatory agencies and departments locally and in New Zealand. See more information at www.scamwatch.gov.au
