SME 'wishlist' drives NAB's new EFTPOS terminals offering

Research showing that tradespeople, restaurateurs and market-traders want a small, portable, all-in-one EFTPOS terminal has influenced a major overhaul of National Australia Bank's merchant terminal offering.

Market research conducted for NAB by OmniCom Research asked small to medium enterprise (SME) owners from trades, markets, hospitality, independent supermarkets and small traders to rate the terminal features they valued most highly.

This SME 'wishlist' has culminated in NAB launching three new terminals, including a streamlined wireless (portable) all-in-one model that's the smallest on the market capable of real time processing of credit and debit card transactions.

NAB's General Manager Acquiring, Mr Peter Roeleven, said the new terminals gave SMEs across the spectrum the ability to offer customers the convenience and flexibility of EFTPOS with a range of features that suit more merchants.

"No matter if you're a restaurateur who wants to take the terminal to the table, an electrician that needs durability and portability, or an independent supermarket that wants a workhorse, NAB has a terminal for your small business," Mr Roeleven said.

"SMEs told us that having EFTPOS facilities could sometimes mean the difference in making a sale or collecting a payment right away. NAB's new terminals were selected directly as a result of feedback from SMEs."

NAB Escape Mobile Terminal -  A 'carry anywhere' wireless terminal for high mobility (restaurants, delivery services, trades) featuring PIN pad, high-speed printer and terminal in one. High functionality including tips and pre-authority.

NAB Essentials - A smart, single cable terminal that gives micro traders with low transaction volumes a cost-effective terminal solution to accept all forms of card payments.

NAB Eclipse - A card acceptance terminal with an enhanced feature set suitable for businesses that have higher transaction volumes or more complex needs.

NAB's General Manager Acquiring, Mr Peter Roeleven, said NAB's new EFTPOS terminals range signalled NAB was serious about its merchant terminals business, and offering SMEs what they need.

"NAB's new merchant terminals are at the forefront of terminal design and technology, featuring fantastic reliability, fast printing speed and great screen visibility.

"We're particularly excited to introduce the NAB Escape Mobile Terminal - it's small and streamlined, so is easily carried in a pocket or toolbox, can be used at outdoor markets or taken to the restaurant table. It's also durable enough to withstand the rough and tumble of a mobile environment," Mr Roeleven said.

Mr Roeleven said the new terminals range was good news for SMEs, whether or not they were currently NAB customers.

The terminal can be easily installed which makes it easy to switch.  To make the change to the new NAB terminals, customers should call 1300 EFTPOS to make a simple, fast over the phone application.

"I'd encourage any small business to assess whether their current merchant terminal is the doing the best job. NAB's new terminals are designed to keep up with the pace of business today, giving SMEs greater flexibility than ever in providing EFTPOS facilities," Mr Roeleven said.

NAB's new terminals range will be rolled out progressively from August to October.

SMEs EFTPOS Terminals 'Wishlist' - NAB Research by Omnicom

Tradespeople rated wireless, portable EFTPOS facilities as critical for on-the-spot payments, so money could be collected right away. Having the PIN pad, printer and terminal all-in-one, and small enough to carry in a pocket, were also key drivers.

Restaurateurs sought a portable terminal they could carry to the table, was backlit for better visibility in subdued lighting and printed duplicate receipts.

Market-traders, operating in a competitive 'impulse purchase' environment where people don't always carry cash, rated an all-in-one portable terminal as the most attractive solution.

Sole operators like mobile dog groomers and mobile hairdressers - frustrated by lost opportunities to 'up sell' due to customers' limited cash in hand and averse to administration - wanted portability, but a separate print terminal.

Independent supermarket operators, who aim to minimise customer queue time, rated speed of processing and the 'familiarity' of the terminal, so customers were comfortable using it, as priorities.

Minimum requirements of all SMEs were dedicated account option keys, once-only swipe, easy to push PIN pads for minimal errors, and an easy-to-read screen.
