Our History

National Australia Bank is an international financial services group providing a comprehensive range of banking and financial services in its core markets of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Asia.

Founded in the Australian State of Victoria in 1858, The National Bank of Australasia as it was originally known - quickly became renowned as one of the more prudent banking institutions in the country.

Early growth was based in the urban and rural areas of Victoria and South Australia. Gradually over the years, it expanded and absorbed a number of other banking institutions in Australia. These include the Colonial Bank of Australasia, taken over in 1918, the Bank of Queensland in 1922, the Queensland National Bank in 1948 and the Ballarat Banking Company in 1955.

However, the major springboard for the Group's success today was the merger in 1981 with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form what we now know as the National Australia Bank.
