Stay eSecure over the holiday period

National Australia Bank is reminding people to stay eSecure over the holiday period and protect against online fraud.

Steve Collier, General Manager of NAB's Direct bank, said relaxing over the holiday period can sometimes mean a temptation to relax everyday online security standards.

"This is the time of year when a lot of us either go on holiday or take a break from everyday life and it might be tempting to cut corners when it comes to banking online," he said.

"Now is the perfect time to remind people about our five simple tips for staying eSecure."

1. If your bank offers second factor authentication - use it.
Some banks offer second factor authentication to help protect your accounts online.

NAB offers its customers free access to SMS security, a second factor authentication service that uses your mobile phone to protect your account online.

Ask your bank if they offer free second factor authentication.

2. Use a computer that you know and trust.
If you are going away for the holidays avoid the temptation of using an internet café or other public computer to bank online.

If you can't access a trusted computer during your holiday then plan ahead and speak with your bank about telephone banking options before you leave.

3. Pause before responding to a suspicious email or website and never provide your password or pin - even if asked.
Holidays mean a little bit more time to spare and it might be tempting to read or click on spam email links that you would usually delete.   Spam email links can download viruses on your computer.

If you receive spam or scam email delete it. NAB will never ask its customers for their password.

4. Always logon to Internet banking from your bank's homepage by typing the URL into the address bar.
Some scams emails ask you to click on a link to go to your bank's website - never click on these links.

By typing your bank's URL into the address bar you can be confident that you are entering a trusted site.

5. Keep your anti-virus, firewall and spyware software including operating system patches up-to-date.
Free security software downloads and systems patches are available online from NAB's online security pages. Visit www.nab.com.auand click on the security update link for more information.

Mr Collier said Internet Banking customers were becoming more aware of the best ways to bank online.

"While NAB's security teams are constantly working behind the scenes, partnering with law enforcement agencies, closing down scam websites and monitoring accounts for suspicious activity, it's also important for customers to know what they can do.

"By remembering our five simple tips people can stay eSecure and concentrate on enjoying their holiday."

NAB customers can register for SMS security by calling 1300 651 656.
