NAB joins Origin's Carbon Reduction Scheme

National Australia Bank today announced it would be a founding partner in Origin Energy's Carbon Reduction Scheme that will provide businesses with an accredited and verified carbon offsetting framework.

NAB CEO Australia, Mr Ahmed Fahour, said NAB's participation in the scheme is a significant proof-point in the bank's effort to become carbon neutral.

"We welcome Origin's establishment of a consistent framework that businesses can access across Australia," Mr Fahour said.

"At NAB we have a range of activities under way to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions. And to account for those emissions we can't eliminate, we will buy carbon credits.

"This is a matter that people feel passionately about and we will explore opportunities with Origin Energy to go beyond the simple purchase of green energy and carbon offsets for our own operations.  We'll be working with Origin on developing simple ways to bring the benefits of the Carbon Reduction Scheme to our customers and employees.

"Many of our major buildings, such as our Docklands headquarters, already operate to high environmental standards. Our property team will work with Origin's energy efficiency experts to identify opportunities for further improvement"

Last week NAB's Group Chief Executive Officer John Stewart announced the National Australia Bank Group's intention to reduce the greenhouse gas impact of its operations to zero by 30 September 2010. This will be achieved through improving energy efficiency and use across its international operations and purchasing offset credits where emissions can't be avoided.
