NAB is promoting computer security as another weapon in the fight against fraud by negotiating low cost home-based protection for customers.
Steve Collier, NAB Direct General Manager said NAB is advising customers to remember to protect their PCs as they would their other home belongings so that they have a secure Internet gateway when transacting online.
"Since 2005 NAB has helped customers bank with confidence by sending SMS alerts to their mobile phones to confirm authorised internet banking transactions. Now NAB is ensuring that customers can buy cost effective software to secure their home computers," he said.
"The affordable home-based privacy protection tools help to keep customers' PCs safe from nasties like viruses and key logging trojans that make home PCs susceptible to online transaction fraud.
"While about 250,000 customers are already banking safely by receiving NAB's SMS alerts each time they complete an internet banking transaction, the next line of defence is the customer and ensuring that they have the right home-based security.
"NAB is also a member of The Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce and lending its support to the Taskforce's four week March campaign: Scams Target You - Protect Yourself, which this week has a focus on protecting computers."
Mr Collier said there are a few simple rules to remember when banking online:
1. If your bank offers second factor authentication - use it. NAB customers can call 1300 651 656 to register for SMS security
2. Keep your computer's operating system patches and security software including Anti-Virus, Firewall and Anti-spyware up to date.
3. Always logon to Internet banking from a bank homepage by typing the URL into the address bar.
4. Pause before responding to a suspicious email or website and never provide your password or PIN.
5. Use a computer that you know and trust. Don't use public computers for Internet banking e.g. Internet cafes, libraries or hotels. Find out more from www.nab.com.au/security
