Skill-based volunteering

This page provides information about skill-based volunteering opportunities and is for community groups.

With a strong culture of community support and volunteering, it is not surprising that NAB employees have begun to think about how they can make a greater volunteering contribution through the transfer of their professional skills.

All NAB employees have two days' paid volunteer leave each year. In addition to general volunteering opportunities, NAB is seeking opportunities which result in a transfer of our peoples' skills and knowledge to community organisations.

To help community organisations identify and develop skill based volunteering positions, NAB and Volunteering Australia have developed a toolkit.

More about the NAB Skills Register
It takes time for community groups to develop these more complex short term projects, and a good understanding of the range of skills which are available to them.  Your perception of the types of skills which are possessed by NAB employees may not accurately reflect the reality.

The NAB Skills Register was developed after interviewing a representative sample of NAB employees. The register organises the job role tasks of NAB employees into general categories, and identifies which skills they have to offer. The register defines these tasks in a language applicable to community groups.

For professional indemnity reasons NAB employees are restricted from giving financial advice. However, they can give advice on your financial management systems and procedures.

Use the NAB Skills Register to help you describe the types of skills you require.

Why skilled volunteering?
A NAB volunteer offers more than just their skills. Community groups often talk about how helpful it is to have a new perspective on doing things, and the incidental transfer of knowledge that takes place when a volunteer observes the operation of the organisation 'up close'.

Corporate volunteers are also renowned for their time efficiency. Community groups can sometimes overestimate the time it will take to complete a task and underestimate the volunteer's capacity to hit the ground running.

Furthermore, community groups have similar organisational challenges as for-profit enterprises such as managing change, coordinating the activities of branches in different geographic locations, recruiting and retaining human resources and developing new business concepts.
