The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is a world leader in its field, pioneering study into some of the most widespread diseases affecting our community today. Founded almost 45 years ago, initially as a research department of St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, it is now one of Australia's largest medical research institutions with over three hundred and fifty scientists, students and support staff.
Research at Garvan is focused upon understanding the role of genes in health and disease as the basis for developing future cures. Significant breakthroughs have been achieved by Garvan scientists in the understanding and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and mental illness, osteoporosis, arthritis and asthma, pituitary tumours and disorders.
NAB and MLC are proud to have contributed over $3,000,000 in funding to this much needed research.
