The latest results from NAB’s Big Life Survey* show that Aussies are spending up to 1000 hours a year on tasks they would rather avoid, like cleaning the house, paying bills and banking.
Most would rather spend that time with family and friends, being pampered, or on a new hobby.
NAB’s Big Life Survey shows that the average Australian spends:
• 7.5 hours a week travelling to and from work, school and other places
• 6.8 hours a week cleaning their home, cars and desks
• 3.2 hours a week shopping for food, clothes and household items
• 3 hours a week banking, paying bills and reading mail.
More than 80% of people said they would prefer to spend this time with family and friends while:
• 65% of people said they would relax and pamper themselves
• 60% of people said they would get active and go to the gym
• 56% of people said they would take up a hobby.
The survey also showed significant gender inequality with women spending 72% more time on chores and 32% more time shopping than men.
The sexes are equal, however, when it comes to household administration, banking and paying bills. Men and women both spend about three hours a week on those tasks.
NAB’s Executive General Manager Retail Banking, Andrew Thorburn, said the results were an important reminder that banking should always be as easy and convenient as possible.
“People don’t want to spend their time wading through complex financial information,” he said.
“Banks need to have the right people on hand to provide the right advice. Our customers want to be confident that their money is working for them so they can get on with enjoying the good things in life.”
NAB has increased the number of experts on hand to help its customers with:
• 100 mobile bankers ready to visit customers when it’s convenient to them
• 780 home lending specialists in branch
• 265 business lending specialists in branch
• 100 financial planning specialists in branch
“Banks also need to harness technology, such as that in mobile phones and the Internet, to make banking more convenient for their customers.”
NAB has recently launched an interactive section on its website for people who want easy access to the right financial information for each stage of their life - www.nab.com.au/life
