Serving up goodwill

2 January 2008

Food relief charity One Umbrella and NAB served Melbourne's homeless a measure of goodwill during 2007.

Almost 400 bank employees helped the charity to prepare and distribute around 74,000 meals from its Southbank kitchens.

NAB announced a formal volunteering partnership with One Umbrella in August 2007. The charity collects unwanted food from 70 butchers, bakers, caterers, manufacturers and markets and turns it into nutritious meals for the homeless and hungry of the city.

In addition NAB people have been lending their grey matter to One Umbrella through the bank's new skill-based volunteering program, where employees offer their professional skills to not for profit organisations.

This year is an exciting time for the NAB/One Umbrella volunteering partnership as the charity aims to serve up one million meals with the help of bank staff. In preparation, the One Umbrella kitchens are on the move to larger premises to help the charity achieve its goal.

Volunteers are essential to One Umbrella's operations. The charity needs 150 people each month to assist with admin, banking, driving, and food preparation.

NAB funds two days' paid volunteer leave for its employees each year.
