By September 2010, National Australia Bank Group intends to become carbon neutral.

In Australia, NAB is responsible for more than 90% of National Australia Bank Group's total greenhouse gas emissions.

Becoming carbon neutral means reducing and neutralising the greenhouse gas emissions we generate.

We will do this through a range of energy reduction initiatives including:

  • Reducing the amount of power used to run heating and cooling, light and security in our buildings as well as office equipment like computers and printers.
  • Replacing 50% of our car fleet with more fuel efficient vehicles and introducing hybrid vehicles.
  • Setting air travel reduction targets to further decrease emissions from business travel.

We will also acquire 10% of our electricity from accredited renewable energy sources like wind and solar power by 2010.

Carbon offsets will be purchased to cancel out emissions we cannot avoid.

A progress report titled Carbon Neutral Update (PDF, 1.3Mb), was released in April 2008 and provides a detailed overview of what the bank is doing in the Australian region to reduce its carbon footprint.
