South Africa is home to some of the world's leading beef genetics, and the National Australia Bank (NAB) is hosting a 25 day study tour later this year to give local cattle producers a chance to see some of the country's top studs. The tour commences on 13th November 2008, returning 9th December 2008.
The trip will include visits to significant herds of Brahman and Beefmaster, Bonsmara, Angus and Brangus, Santa Getrudis and Simmental, to name a few.
NAB's General Manager of Agribusiness, Khan Horne, says it's an opportunity not to be missed. "South Africa's climate is very similar to ours and Australian producers regularly import its genetics. Even though bos indicus cattle are prominent, there is much to be learned by southern cattle producers as well as those from Australia's north".
"On arrival in South Africa, participants will be welcomed by representatives from the Australian High Commission, Austrade and South Africa's meat and livestock industries, who will provide a briefing on the important issues facing the South African industry. The study tour will include a walk through one of the largest semen testing centres in the world and a feedlot with more than 85,000 head on feed. It's not every day you get to talk to the Staal brothers, whose Red Brahman have been sold for record prices in Australia in recent years; or the farmer responsible for introducing Wagyu cattle to South Africa; or one of the foundation breeders of Brangus cattle in South Africa. There's also an opportunity to learn about the ancient Nguni breed, descended from cattle that entered Africa around 8000 years ago," Mr Horne said.
The trip isn't all work, with time out for sightseeing, animal safaris and shopping, and an optional add-on tour to the Okavango Delta.
The basic study tour will cost around $11,000, including flights and accommodation, with additional charges for the excursions. It leaves mid-November and returns in early December 2008.
Applications and deposits must be received by 13th August 2008.
