5.3 You may only use the service and the service will only be available in connection with participating online retailers.

5.4 The accountholder is responsible for any use of the service by a cardholder.

6. Password and security

6.1 Security requirements

You must choose a new password whenever you are required to by NAB.

You must:

(a) not voluntarily disclose your password to any other person including a family member or friend;

(b) not act with extreme carelessness in failing to protect the security of the password; and

(c) not record your password (without making any reasonable attempt to protect the security of the password) on the card or on any article carried with the card or liable to loss or theft simultaneously with the card.

When NAB allows you to select the password or change the password you must not select:

(i) a code, which represents your date of birth; or

(ii) a code which is a recognisable part of your name.

Either of these selections may mean you are liable for losses caused by unauthorised transactions caused by a breach of your password.

These security requirements form part of the responsibilities outlined in the Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions contained in the following documents:

  • For a NAB Credit Card - Clause 6.5 of NAB Electronic Banking (card based) Product Disclosure Statement
  • For a NAB Personal Project Loan - Clause 19.7 of NAB Personal Project Loans Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved prior to 18 June 2007) or Clause 18.7 of  NAB Personal Project Loan Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved on or after 18 June 2007)
  • For a NAB Visa Debit card – Clause 34.5 of Personal Transaction and Savings Products Terms & Conditions.

6.2 Guidelines

You should comply with these guidelines to protect the security of your password and thus reduce the possibility of any inconvenience to you:

(a) do not permit any other person to use your password;

(b) take reasonable care when using your password to ensure it is not disclosed to any other person;

(c) should you make a memory aid to recall your password you may make such a record providing the record is reasonably disguised. However NAB does not consider the following examples to provide a reasonable disguise and you agree not to:

(i) record the disguised password on the card;

(ii) disguise a password by reversing the sequence;

(iii) describe the disguised record as "Verified by Visa password record" or "MasterCard SecureCode password record" or "password record" or "Verified by Visa" or "MasterCard SecureCode" or any easily recognisable abbreviation of "Verified by Visa" or "MasterCard SecureCode ";

(iv) disguise the password as a telephone number, part of a telephone number, postcode or date of birth;

(v) disguise the password using alphabetical characters eg A= 1,B=2,C=3 etc.

There may be other forms of disguise which may be similarly unsuitable because of the ease of another person discerning your password.

These security guidelines are in addition to and will form part of the security guidelines set out in the Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions and are for your assistance. You should take care to meet these guidelines as a failure to do so may in some circumstances constitute an act of extreme carelessness under 6.1(b) above.

However the accountholder's liability in the case of actual loss will be governed in accordance with 7 "Accountholder liability for unauthorised transactions" and the relevant clause of the Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions as contained in the following documents;

  • For a NAB Credit Card- Clause 6.5 of  NAB Electronic Banking (card based) Product Disclosure Statement
  • For a NAB Personal Project Loan – Clause 19.9 of NAB Personal Project Loans Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved prior to 18 June 2007) or Clause 18.9 of  NAB Personal Project Loan Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved on or after 18 June 2007)

NAB will acknowledge your report and you should record or retain this acknowledgment.

  • For a NAB Visa Debit card – Clause 34 of Personal Transaction and Savings Products Terms and Conditions

7.2 The following will also apply.
The accountholder's liability for any use of the service not authorised by you may be limited as provided below:

    The accountholder is not liable for losses:

(i) resulting from unauthorised transactions occurring after notification to NAB that the security of the password has been breached; and

(ii) arising because the password is forged, faulty, expired or cancelled.

  • Accountholder liability for unauthorised transactions

The accountholder is liable for losses resulting from unauthorised transactions as provided below:

(i) where NAB can prove on the balance of probability that you have contributed to the losses through your fraud or your contravention of the security requirements of 6.1 above, the accountholder is liable for the actual losses which occur before NAB is notified that the security of the password has been breached.

However the accountholder is not liable for any of the amounts set out in the Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions as follows:

  • For a NAB Credit Card – Clause 6.4(a) of NAB Electronic Banking (card based) Product Disclosure Statement
  • For a NAB Personal Project Loan – Clause 19.9(a) of NAB Personal Project Loans Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved prior to 18 June 2007) or Clause 18.9(a) of the NAB Personal Project Loan Terms and Conditions (for accounts approved on or after 18 June 2007)
  • For a NAB Visa Debit card – Clause 34.4(a) of Personal Transaction and Savings Products Terms and Conditions

In addition the accountholder is not liable for any losses incurred on  accounts which the accountholder and NAB had not agreed could be accessed by the password.

(ii) where NAB can prove on the balance of probability that you contributed to losses resulting from unauthorised transactions because you unreasonably delayed notifying NAB after becoming aware that the security of the password had been breached, the accountholder will then be liable for the actual losses which occur between the time you became aware and when NAB was actually notified.

However the accountholder will not be liable for any of the amounts set out in the Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions as contained in the following documents:

  • For a NAB Credit Card – Clause 6.4(b) of NAB Electronic Banking (card based) Product Disclosure Statement

  • For a NAB Visa Debit card – Clause 34.4(b) of Personal Transaction and Savings Products Terms and Conditions

In addition the accountholder is not liable for any losses incurred on accounts which the accountholder and NAB had not agreed could be accessed by using the password.

(iii) where the password was required to perform the unauthorised transaction and neither paragraphs (i) or (ii) above applies, the accountholder is liable for the least of:

  • $150;
  • the balance of those account(s) (including any prearranged credit) from which value was transferred in the unauthorised transaction and which NAB and the accountholder have agreed may be accessed using the password; or
  • the actual loss at the time NAB is notified (where relevant) that the security of the password has been breached (excluding that portion of the losses incurred in any one day which exceeds any applicable daily transaction or other periodic transaction limit(s)).

8 Lost/stolen cards, change of accounts, change of name

Changes to any card or account details which you provided on registration for the service will be updated automatically in the event NAB issues you with a new card or account (as applicable).

The Secure Online Shopping Terms and Conditions will continue to apply to the use of the service with your new card or account (as applicable). For example:

(a) if the account is replaced because a card has been reported lost or stolen and you have been issued a new card by NAB (excluding a NAB Visa Debit Emergency Card Replacement);

(b) if in the case of a business account your card has been reported lost or stolen and a new card has been issued to you by NAB;

(c) if you notify NAB that the name appearing on your card has changed (for example changing to a married name from a maiden name) and a new card is issued to you; or

(d) if the account is replaced by NAB following the accountholder's request to transfer to a new account. This example does not apply to business accounts or business customers, Personal Project Loan accountholders or NAB Visa Debit cardholders. Further where the new account is of a different credit card scheme than the account it replaces (for example the new account is a Visa account and the replaced account is a MasterCard or vice-versa), you will need to separately register the new account for the service.

Any update of your service details may take up to two banking days to complete and you may not be able to perform EFT Transactions using the service during this time.
