7 grants given to improving mental health and wellbeing in 2016.

Why is this important?

We acknowledge that health, particularly mental health, is an increasing concern in the community and a key issue for the financial services sector. We aim to address this with a series of targeted initiatives to better equip our employees and our customers in responding to the circumstances they face.

We’re also focused on supporting the wellbeing of our people through the My Health & Wellbeing online portal, Employee Assistance Program and other support services.

What do we do?

We’re creating a healthy working environment for our people

Our vision is to have 100% of our employees well at work. Managing safety and supporting the health and wellbeing of our people creates a healthy environment in which employees can perform, are resilient in time of change, are engaged and productive and continue to develop – doing the right thing for our people, customers and community.

We do this by offering a range of tools, resources, services and programs to assist in managing physical health and mental wellbeing. This includes a strong focus on early intervention for physical or psychological illness and injury, a range of mental health initiatives supported by the Employee Assistance Program, flexible work practices, an influenza vaccination program, and other programs throughout the year.

We’ve supported our employees with training for a mentally-healthy workplace

Our training takes place in two forms. We train our people leaders and employees to encourage a mentally-healthy workplace. We also train key customer-facing business units to ensure mental health considerations are taken into account when dealing with customers.

We’ve stepped up to better support customers with mental health considerations

We’ve collaborated with our insurance industry peers to develop mental health training for customers who have life insurance. This follows moves by the insurance industry regulator to raise mental health awareness and boost support for frontline staff.

We’ve also developed a centralised reporting system to capture incidents involving customers threatening self-harm. This will provide more accurate data and assist the industry to create effective and targeted support strategies.

We support leaders in mental health to extend our reach

  • We promote Heads Up to support our small and medium-sized business customers. Developed by the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance and beyondblue, HeadsUp is all about supporting Australian businesses to create more mentally healthy workplaces by providing free tools and resources to take action.
  • We extend our counselling partner to customers in times of crisis. In the event of natural disasters, customers are offered access to our Employee Assistance Program. This includes free short-term face-to-face telephone or online counselling

We’ve deepened our understanding of the key drivers of mental health and wellbeing

Through the NAB Foundation we support seven organisations that are improving the mental health and wellbeing of Australians through our 2016 Stronger Minds grants program. Learn more about the NAB Foundation.
