Indigenous Leadership Scholarships launched as part of NAB Reconciliation Action Plan initiatives

5 July 2009

Marking the first day of NAIDOC Week, National Australia Bank today announced it will fund 20 Indigenous Leadership Scholarships in a joint initiative with the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre (AILC).

The NAB scholarships will fund course placements for Indigenous Australians seeking to gain formal leadership qualifications through the AILC’s Indigenous Leadership certificate courses.

Stephanie Rice, NAB Indigenous Affairs Manager said that the scholarships aim to support emerging Indigenous leaders by giving graduates the necessary knowledge, experience and skills to position them for pivotal leadership roles.

“This scholarship program is a unique opportunity for Indigenous Australians wanting to proactively shape the future of the communities and regions they work and live in.

“It’s an initiative under NAB’s Reconciliation Action Plan and we are encouraging the Indigenous organisations we work with and our Indigenous customers to apply for these certificate courses.

This commitment is also shared by NAB’s biggest Indigenous customer, the NSW Australian Lands Council, an Indigenous organisation that has recently partnered with the AILC to also fund nearly twenty additional AILC certificate scholarships.

The AILC is an Indigenous, not-for-profit organisation working to build the capacity of Indigenous Australians to meet the many challenges facing their communities. With more than 600 Indigenous graduates the AILC offers accredited courses in Indigenous Leadership, as well as non-accredited short courses in specific leadership skills.

“This support from NAB, combined with our recent partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Lands Council, ensures we can deliver a unique, high quality and culturally appropriate leadership program; custom-designed for the needs of emerging Indigenous leaders,” commented AILC CEO, Rachelle Towart.

“Ultimately, the more Indigenous leaders we have, the better placed we are to bring about positive changes in the community and developing and sharing a vision for Indigenous Australia,” Ms Towart added.

The AILC will award the NAB Indigenous Scholarships to the twenty applicants who best fit the course criteria.
