NAB wins NT Government banking services tender

16 March 2011

National Australia Bank (NAB) has been awarded the tender to provide banking services to the Northern Territory Government.

From April 2011, NAB will supply core transaction banking, merchant facilities and corporate card requirements to more than 35 Territory agencies and government business divisions.

The NT Government is one of the largest employers in the Northern Territory.

David Brown, NAB Government Business National Managing Partner, said that this new partnership between the NT Government and NAB builds upon the strong and successful relationship that NAB has built with its customers in the Northern Territory over many decades.

"NAB has provided banking services to personal and business customers in the Northern Territory since 1955 and our appointment marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Northern Territory Government," Mr Brown said.

"Our people are our best assets and over the years, NAB has built a very strong team of specialist bankers to support the needs of local and state governments all around Australia.

"We are expanding this specialist government banking team in the Northern Territory to ensure we maximise the opportunity this new partnership presents.

"In addition to our support to businesses, individuals and government, NAB is also committed to investing in the NT community, including our Schools First, NAB AusKick, Micro Finance Loan and Indigenous programs," he said.

NAB also partners with the Traditional Credit Union (TCU), Australia’s only Aboriginal-owned banking institution, which currently provides banking services in 11 communities across the Northern Territory. TCU identifies 85 per cent of all staff members as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. This partnership collaborated on a submission for future expansion of the TCU’s branch network within the Northern Territory.

The partnership of NAB and TCU supports the Northern Territory Government and Commonwealth Government with the commitment to welfare system reforms and provides culturally relevant and informed financial services within remote communities.

In 2010, NAB established an Indigenous Money Mentors program and the Indigenous Employment Program, which recruited more than 72 Indigenous employees across Australia since its beginning in 2008.
