Indigenous traineeships

Indigenous School Based Traineeship

One of the ways you can start your career at NAB is via a School Based Traineeship.

While completing year 11 and 12 studies, trainees will:

  • work one day a week in a NAB branch during school term and full-time in school holidays
  • receive an income while learning new skills
  • achieve a National Certificate qualification
  • be supported by NAB employees and Aboriginal mentors
  • be able to take on career opportunities with NAB or other opportunities at the end of your traineeship

Applicants must:

  • be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • identifies as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
  • is accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived; and
  • have the support of either your parents or legal guardian and your school.

Full Time Traineeship

NAB’s reputation as Australia’s leading business bank is due to the quality of our people and their passionate, ongoing commitment to supporting Australian businesses.

We’re diverse – partnering with the entire small to medium enterprise business - from start ups to small firms to medium sized companies.

This is a great opportunity for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person to undertake a Full Time Traineeship with the National Australia Bank in their Business Banking Centres. Successful candidates will learn the business from the ground up. It is very much a developmental role so skills will be gained throughout the duration of the traineeship.

This initiative is aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people interested in a business banking career, who have not completed an undergraduate qualification.

The Traineeship Opportunity

  • 12 month traineeship opportunity with a career pathway that could lead into an Associate role in one of the Business Banking Centres. The opportunities are endless.
  • As a Trainee Associate you will thrive with challenge and variety, you will be confident and have a keen interest in enhancing your skills in customer service, sales, analytical and administrative support.
  • With an emphasis on helping customers, you will support your team by assisting and developing your knowledge and skills in providing specialist financial advice, identifying opportunities, managing workflows and document preparation.
  • Trainees will work full-time in the Business Banking Centre (on the job training) and simultaneously undertake study with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as TAFE, and gain a national accreditation Certificate III or IV in Financial Services.
  • You will enjoy working in a team environment and be keen to develop a career in the banking & finance industry.
  • Be supported by NAB staff and Indigenous mentors
  • Receive an income while gaining confidence and valuable work and life skills
    (National Training Wage Skills Level A aware rate approximately $530 per week)

To be eligible applicants must:

  • be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • identifies as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
  • is accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • successfully have completed year 12;
  • a minimum two years experience in financial services, sales, retail environment;
  • strong customer service and communication skills;
  • enjoy working in with teams and up for the challenge of working in fast changing environment; and
  • good numeracy and literacy skills
