Since 2002, NAB has been helping Australia's most talented young footballers reach their potential through the NAB AFL Rising Star Program. The NAB AFL Rising Star Program provides NAB with a unique opportunity to help the young stars of the game reach their potential.
For NAB, contributing to the development of AFL Football through the NAB AFL Rising Star Program, NAB AFL Auskick and the NAB Cup is a great opportunity to offer Australians a unique football experience, from grassroots through to the elite level.
The NAB AFL Rising Star was instituted in 1993 to recognise and encourage talented young players in the AFL and is now recognised as one of the leagues most prestigious and sought after awards.
To be eligible, nominees must have played no more than 10 AFL games at the start of the season, and must be under 21 years of age as at 1 January of that year. After each AFL Home & Away round, a player is nominated for the award and at the end of the AFL season. The all-Australian selection panel then chooses the winner from these nominees.
In addition to receiving the NAB Club Recognition Award, the 22 junior clubs of each NAB AFL Rising Star nominee will also go in the running to win a nab on the rise event. Valued at approximately $15,000, the winning junior club will receive a special event at their local footy ground with a free sausage sizzle, AFL superstars, NAB AFL ambassadors and a number of exciting giveaways. David Zaharakis was Essendon's second selection (No.23 overall) at last year's NAB AFL draft, which was a dream come true for the lifelong Bomber fan. Zaharakis had 21 disposals and 10 marks in his debut match against Fremantle.
"From a whole package point of view we were pleased because not only did he win the ball but his disposal and decision making was really good for a young player. He also chased, tackled and harassed - he put as much energy into this part of his game as any other part." Essendon coach Matthew Knights said.
Zaharakis forced his way into the senior Essendon line-up off the back of an outstanding seven goal performance with Bendigo in the VFL.
"As a match committee we loved that he brings a real energy and enthusiasm to his game and that is infectious on the team." said Knights.

NAB AFL Rising Star: Rd 3 - Patrick Dangerfield
Round 3 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, Patrick Dangerfield, has come a long way in just six months. Dangerfield, 19, arrived at West Lakes permanently in November after spending his first year on the Crows' list finishing his Year 12 studies at home in Victoria.
Dangerfield, playing in just his fifth AFL match continued his rapid rise with 20 possessions, five clearances and a goal in a near best-afield performance in the Crows' gutsy win over Fremantle at Subiaco.
"I did some good things, but there are still plenty of things to improve upon. I feel more comfortable as each game goes by and I got more time in the midfield which was good for me." Dangerfield said.

NAB AFL Rising Star: Rd 4 - Jaxson Barham
The son of Collingwood legend Ricky Barham, Jaxson Barham, may have always been destined to one day play for Collingwood but he was still surprised when he heard that he was going to make his debut against the Brisbane Lions.
"I was just chilling in the spa with a few of the boys and Mick came up and shook my hand," he said.
Barham's 28 disposals and nine tackles made him the stand out selection as the Round 4 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee. Assigned to dangerous Lions onballer, Luke Power, Barham showed a maturity beyond his years in only his first game. "I think most of my nerves were because I was playing on him. He's such a champion and I was pretty nervous to line up against him," Barham said.
"He showed me a lot about being a good midfielder. He took me to a lot of the right spots at the stoppages and that probably got me a few extra possies. I also saw just how hard you have to run."

NAB AFL Rising Star: Rd 5 - Gary Moss
HAWTHORN'S injury woes have been one of the talking points of the season, but one of the positives to have come from the setbacks has been the opportunity granted to Garry Moss. Moss had 24 touches and kicked four goals against West Coast to earn the Round 5 NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.
His story is one of persistence and determination after he was delisted by the Hawks last year, only to work his way back into the side via the rookie list. "I always believed in myself that I had the ability. I guess you don't really know until you play at the level. Being a late call-up in the Sydney game, there wasn't really much pressure," he said.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said Gary's persistence is paying off.
"This is Gary's third year in the system and after suffering some injuries early in his career he's starting to get some positive results for his hard work. Gary's story is a good lesson to young aspiring footballers that there is more than one pathway to playing AFL," Clarkson said.

The speedy midfielder debuted in Round 1 and has played all six matches this season. Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said Hill's ability to fit straight into the AFL system was significant.
"To play in a derby and play the way he did plus handle the pressure and the build-up to the game is a real feather in Stephen's cap".
"As each game goes by, he is working out more and more how he can take the game on. Players who can bring their team mates into the game have a special quality and he's got that," Harvey said.

Collingwood’s Brad Dick has been going from strength to strength this year in his return from a full knee reconstruction. Dick booted five goals against Melbourne in front of more than 60,000 people and says he enjoyed every minute of it.
