NAB provides an exceptional graduate experience. We know that learning and development are essential to giving you the right skills and confidence to help you build a strong and fulfilling career. We also understand that you value a sense of community and that it’s important to learn as much as you can about NAB from our senior leaders.
So, no matter which NAB Graduate Program you choose, you’ll receive:
- structured and on-the-job learning and development
- education about the wider business and exposure to senior leaders
- support as part of the graduate community
Learning and development
NAB is committed to the learning and development of our people and believes in The Academy learning philosophy. This not only provides the platform for all of your learning, but sets you up for success by giving you the right combination of technical training and emotional intelligence skills. Our dedicated team of Graduate Managers will structure and tailor technical skills learning to your needs, from public speaking to business writing and stakeholder management.
We’ll also help you develop emotional intelligence skills such as self awareness, personal resilience and strong communication and leadership styles, so you know how to handle yourself at work and how to relate to customers, colleagues and people leaders.
Business acumen
Each of our graduate programs is aligned to one NAB business area, allowing our graduates to gain a thorough understanding of that area. But it’s also critical to your development as future leaders to enhance your knowledge of the wider organisation. Three times a year we bring all graduates together in Melbourne to increase your awareness of what’s going on at NAB and to give you access to senior leaders outside of your business area.
Graduate community
Building a sense of community and establishing wide networks is valuable for support and critical to growing your personal profile. So, as well as support from a graduate manager, a people leader and your team, there is also peer support from a number of committees. These committees are run by graduates, for graduates and are responsible for establishing and maintaining a collaborative graduate community.
See below for further information on each of the Graduate Committees
Graduate Committee
NAB encourages all employees, regardless of position or experience, to get involved in the organisation. Each year we form Graduate Committees (managed by graduates, for graduates) to be responsible for initiatives ranging from social events to online strategies and community liaison work. These committees build a great sense of community amongst the new graduates and graduate program alumni.
Community Committee
The Community Committee focuses on developing fundraising strategies that support and foster NAB’s relationship with The Oaktree Foundation and its Schools 4 Schools program. This
entirely youth run organisation aims to empower developing communities through education in a sustainable way.
Community Committee highlights from 2009 include an online charity auction, graduate BBQ and chocolate drive. Our final, and biggest, event was the inaugural Oaktree Foundation NAB Graduate Challenge – a charity fun run open to all graduate Communities and Oaktree sponsors.
Join the Community Committee in 2010 and help us continue our fundraising efforts for The Oaktree Foundation.
Publications Committee
You can probably guess what the Publications Committee is responsible for!. We provide articles, interviews and updates specifically tailored to graduates at NAB and are a major source of information to the Graduate Community and our colleagues.
This year, we’ve focused on adopting a coordinated approach to the communication graduates receive, by working more closely with all graduate committees. Our key achievements have been refreshing the graduate newsletter branding and renaming the newsletter gradConnect, as well as working to reduce NAB's carbon footprint by creating the first fully functioning online newsletter with a PDF version for next year's graduates. Participating in this committee has been a great way to learn new skills.
Social Committee
As the graduates delve into the depths of new roles, our committee ensures that we see each other socially. Our responsibility is to maintain the friendships and networks that are developed across the group and to provide opportunities for social events which remind us of life outside work.
2009 kicked off with drinks after our graduate development day and we’ve followed up with trivia nights, casual dinners and an end of year cocktail function. With flexibility around ideas and events, our role can be as simple as organising Friday night drinks!
The Green Graduates Committee
We focus on generating and supporting initiatives aimed at positive contributions to the environment and NAB’s carbon neutral goal. Our objective has been to educate the NAB community in the importance of environmental issues that we are currently facing.
In 2009 the Green Graduates supported the Ride to Work day and NAB environmental Expos. We have promoted the use of environmental signatures and posters to reduce printing. We’ve also organised a volunteer day in 2010 for the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary and we’re establishing a working relationship with Oaktree Foundations environmental initiatives.
The Graduate Online Committee
The Graduate Online Committee is dedicated to helping facilitate communication among graduates in different business units and committees through online and technological channels.
In 2009 we developed gradBase, a collaborative website aimed at minimising the communication gaps between graduates in all different areas of the bank. It’s a fun and informal site that helps keep the graduate community up to date and provides handy hints and tips.
As a group we maintain and run gradBase and assist other committees to share their achievements online. We’re enthusiastic, creative and determined to do things differently!
