Community Investment Initiatives

Currently NAB are investigating how we can help people who are being financially excluded from things such as starting a small business, owning their own home or even just managing a bank account. Other areas of focus we support in strategic but smaller ways are business enterprise, community-based sport, the arts, and historic preservation.

Employee Volunteer Program

NAB provides for two days paid volunteer leave each year for its employees. We use this leave to carry out voluntary work for non-profit organisations in our communities. In the past year we've contributed more than 6,200 volunteer days or about $1.5 million of in-kind community work.

Employee Volunteer Grant Program

NAB's Employee Volunteer Grant Program helps community or non-profit organisations that we work with as part of the Employee Volunteer Program. Employees are able to nominate the community group or association they volunteer with for an Employee Volunteer Grant of up to $4,000. Since it began in 2003, more than $70,000 has been contributed to communities across Australia.

In October 2007, the Wallan CFA in Victoria moved a step closer to securing a new fire-fighting vehicle thanks to the amazing fund raising efforts of the Collections team in Melbourne.

Rohan Burgess, Asset Realisation Manager, said: “It all started when we heard from staff member Jenny Roylance, who volunteers with Wallan CFA, that the brigade needed a new vehicle.”

Using their NAB Volunteer Leave and their own time, team members ran raffles, quiz nights, wine sales, cake sales, casual days, shopping tours and even a Salsa dancing night – to reach an amazing $12,000 total.

“We really want to get them that truck,” said Rohan. Peter Roylance, husband of Jenny and Captain of Wallan CFA, said the brigade had experienced its busiest year so far and with bush fire season just around the corner a new vehicle would be much needed.“It would take us ten years to raise the kind of money that NAB has raised for us,” he added.

Local Community Donations

Since 2002 NAB has run its Local Community Donations Program where outlets across Australia provide donations directly to local not-for-profit organisations. Donations range from a one-off cash gift to an ongoing partnership with the local group supported by our people with their volunteer leave. In the past year the program contributed almost 2,500 donations totalling more than $850,000.

The Awards recognise the commitment of volunteers around Australia and reward the organisations who demonstrate best practice in their management of this workforce of unsung heroes.

This year the Awards have invested $200,000 into 24 communities across Australia with $20,000 each for the two national winners. Ten state winners received $10,000 each and 12 runners-up were rewarded with $5,000 each for their efforts.

Our environment

We are getting our house in order to make NAB carbon neutral within three years.

This means reducing our energy consumption, switching to green energy like wind or solar power and buying carbon offsets to balance out our emissions.

For the Australia region we will:

  • cut energy use by 20%;
  • reduce and offset car and air travel emissions;
  • source 10% of our energy from renewable sources (wind, solar etc); and
  • offset remaining unavoidable emissions through the purchase of carbon credits.

Across the Australian region we have kicked off a number of initiatives to help us become carbon neutral by 2010.

Energy Efficiency Program

Five of our commercial buildings use 40% of our total energy bill. In order to reduce energy usage we have:

  • Identified 165 energy saving opportunities at 13 of our highest energy use buildings and are already implementing a number of these
  • Changed our standards for designa nd refurbishment of Australian commercial buildings to achieve a minimum 4-Star GreenStar rating
  • Rolled out new XP platform which means desktops are operating more efficiently
  • Server virtualisation – aiming to consolidate 513 servers down to 48

Renewable Energy Program

To help reach our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2010, we will source up to 10% of energy from accredited renewable sources like wind and solar. We are purchasing 2.5% of our electricity as renewable energy for FY08.

Vehicle Emission Reduction and Offset Program

NAB has a fleet of almost 900 motor vehicles which are used for work related purposes, most of which are six cylinder. W are restructuring our job-required car fleet so that 50% of the fleet will move from six cylinder to four cylinder cars. This is anticipated to reduce our greenhouse emissions by at least 5% over the three years. To date, 380 have been converted.

We are also purchasing hybrid vehicles and we aim to have 15 Prius cars on the road by the end of 2008. They will be driven by our retail and business bankers across Australia.

The remaining emissions from the fleet will be offset through the purchase of carbon credits.

Air Travel Offset Program

Over 93 million kilometres of air travel are undertaken by NAB employees per year. The first strategy is to encourage employees to fly less and we have introduced a air travel reduction target of 20% for kilometres travelled in 2008. To help reduce air travel we have installed new video conferencing facilities and promoted there use along with teleconferencing.

The emission that we do generate from air travel in 2008 will be offset through the purchase of carbon credits. Carbon Solutions Group, based at nabCapital, will manage the acquisition of these offsets.
