Snapshot

As one of Australia's leading young cyclists, Anna Meares is the current Olympic and Commonwealth Champion in the Women's 500m Time Trial.  On the 18th November 2006, Anna broke her own world record to claim gold in the 500m time trial at the Track Cycling World Cup in Sydney. The record now stands at 33.944 seconds.

Growing up in the small Central Queensland town of Middlemont, Anna started cycling at the age of 11.  Along with sister Kerrie, Anna watched and was greatly inspired by Kathy Watt's performance at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

In 2001, Anna took out her first major title, winning the Junior World Title - an accolade which was quickly added to the following year when she was selected as a senior for the Manchester Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal in the sprint. In 2003, Anna cemented her position in world cycling by winning her first senior world medal in the Keirin.

In 2004, Anna became the World Champion for the 500m Time Trial and won Silver in the Sprint, granting her selection for the Athens Olympics. In Athens, Anna's hard work and efforts were rewarded when she won Gold in the 500m Time Trial in a World Record time of 33.952 seconds along with a Bronze medal in the Sprint - making her the Youngest Female Olympic Track Cycling Champion ever.  Anna's success in Athens saw her become the first woman to break the 34-second Barrier for the 500m Time Trial and the first Australian woman to win an Olympic Gold on the velodrome.
