Members of the Torres Strait Youth and Recreational Sporting Association are sporting new uniforms thanks to a $4,000 Employee Volunteer Grant from NAB's Thursday Island Branch.

The association organises basketball and volleyball matches for young people in the Torres Strait and arranges their participation in the Peninsula District Athletics Trials. NAB's funding will primarily be used to buy uniforms for the trials, as well as new sports equipment.

"Most children compete in their school uniform, but the Torres Strait team can be made up of 12 different schools which makes them difficult to be seen as a team," explained Ben Stratton, Branch Manager, Thursday Island.

The team at the branch is committed to the association and has been involved in fundraising for it. They regularly help with sporting events and have volunteered their community days to help run its office.

Ben said: "Without the TSYRSA we would suffer from the antisocial behaviour that often is associated with kids with nothing to do.

"It's fantastic for NAB to be able to support junior sports in such a remote area."

NAB's Employee Volunteer Grant Program seeks to help community or non-profit organisations that work with employees as part of the bank's Volunteer Program.
