National launches Secure Internet Payment Service - 29 March 2000

National Australia Bank has developed a secure solution for the online authorisation of credit card transactions, called National Secure Internet Payment Service.

Mr Peter Thomas, the National's Group General Manager, Global Payments, said the new Internet payment gateway was available now to online merchants and will alleviate the concerns many consumers and businesses have about providing credit card details directly over the Internet.

"The payment service is different to others launched so far in Australia. It ensures the consumer's transaction and credit card details are securely transmitted, kept private and always securely stored with the National," said Mr Thomas.

"National Secure Internet Payment Service is also simple to use. Once customers select the goods or services they wish to purchase, they click on the merchant's "pay now" button. This transfers the customer to National Secure Internet Payment Service, which is hosted on the National's own computer server. Here the customer enters credit card details and the payment is authorised and processed," added Mr Thomas.

All transactions made by National Secure Internet Payment Service are verifiable, generating a payment record that customers can print or save for future reference.

For merchants, real time transaction reporting is a key benefit of National Secure Internet Payment Service. To enable reconciliation of purchases, merchants receive an email every time a purchase from their site is processed. The transaction is also recorded on an online database, which merchants can access via the Internet.

The service is easy to integrate with a merchant's website and does not require any special software.

The National also has plans to launch the service for its overseas operations.
