The National's new Internet Banking platform makes it easier for customers to bank on the net - 19 November 2001

The National has today launched a new, enhanced Internet banking service. The new service enables customers to log on and transact electronically from any Internet connected PC anywhere in the world.

Existing Internet banking customers can upgrade to the new service immediately and benefit from the adoption of an HTML browser-based Internet platform, which enables access via a broader range of computer operating systems, including Apple Macintosh computer users.

Kay Thawley, General Manager, Direct Retailing and Distribution, said that the enhanced Internet Banking service was developed and piloted over the past 12 months in response to a surge in market demand and reflects the National's ongoing commitment to providing increased customer choice, functionality and convenience. The success of Internet banking can be seen through the increasing volume of transactions, which are approaching total teller and Australia Post volumes.

'The new-look, anywhere, anytime, any PC or Mac service responds to the fact that the Internet revolution is not coming but has arrived as a mainsteam preferred channel.

'Teller and Australia Post transactions are now just 7 per cent of customers' total transactions. Ninety three per cent of the time, customers are choosing self service and electronic channels to access their money 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

'Over the past year, we've experienced a 50 per cent growth in the rate of Internet banking compared to other channels and a corresponding 25 per cent decline in teller and Australia Post 'assisted' transacting.

'This new service will support an expected increase from the current 500,000 online customers to at least 750,000 within the next 12 months,' Ms Thawley said.

The National has moved to an industry standard in browser-based Internet banking and aims to continue providing leading-edge, integrated customer service through all channels.

National Internet banking functionality includes account information, transaction history, funds transfer payments and bill payments.
