National welcomes Federal Government acceptance of bank-issued digital certificates - 23 March 2001

The National Australia Bank has welcomed today's announcement by the Communications Minister, Senator Richard Alston, that government will accept bank-issued digital certificates used to authenticate businesses in their dealings with them, electronically.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Peter Kempster, the National's General Manager, Payments Australia, said: "Today's announcement will pave the way for the National's business customers to use a single digital certificate to securely trade and exchange documents with government departments and businesses globally.

"The government's decision confirms that Australia has a strong banking sector which will provide a credible and stable basis for B2B electronic commerce.

"It is a further step towards the development of a global e-commerce trading and payments platform for businesses," added Mr Kempster.

The National continues to work pro-actively in Australia and internationally to ensure its customers are provided with secure e-commerce solutions. The National's shareholding in the global Identrus program will ensure its certificates meet the international standards necessary for businesses to fully exploit trading opportunities overseas.

The National will proceed with the development of products that enhance its business customers' opportunity to benefit from these exciting developments in e-commerce capability.
