NATIONAL VOLUNTEER AWARDS: NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

Nominations are now open for the annual National Volunteer Awards, Australia's premier community service and volunteer recognition program.  This year, a total of $500, 000 will be awarded by the National Australia Bank to deserving local and regional volunteer groups with State and National winners recognised in nine categories.

"The spirit of volunteering is alive and well in Australia," said Garry Lyon, AFL legend and National Community Ambassador.  "The National Volunteer Awards reward the dedication of those committed to enhancing and improving their community."

Not-for-profit community groups are encouraged to enter in one of the following categories: Art and Culture; Children and Families; Community Service and Development; Education, Training and Youth Development; Emergency and Safety; Environment, Conservation, Heritage and Animal Welfare; Health and Wellbeing; Rural and Regional Development, or; Sport and Recreation.  The Awards will be judged independently by recognised community leaders in each of the fields.

There will be one winner for each category in each of the states and the combined territories.  State winners will receive $7,000 each, plus become eligible for the national awards, where they will be in the running for an additional $3,000 per category as well as the honour of being named the National Volunteer Award winner for their category.

"The last year has seen volunteering in this country truly shine, especially with the challenges presented by drought, bushfires and the horror of the Bali bombings," said Mr Lyon.  "Whether volunteers are responding to crises or proactively enhancing their communities, they all deserve recognition and reward."

"Just as volunteerism continues to grow across Australia, so too does the National's commitment to it," said Mr Ian MacDonald, the National's Executive General Manager, Financial Services Australia.  "We are proud to have seen the Awards grow into Australia's largest and most successful program to promote, encourage and develop volunteers."

The National gratefully acknowledges its major partner for the seventh year running, Volunteering Australia and welcomes ourcommunity.com.au as a new partner for the 2003 National Volunteer Awards.
