National Australia Bank advises customers to be wary of spam email - 28 August 2003

National Australia Bank today advised customers to ignore emails requesting confidential information such as their National ID and Internet Banking password, following the discovery of a fake Internet Banking site, hosted in the United States.

The site was discovered overnight and the National took immediate action to have the site investigated and shut down, in consultation with the Australian Federal Police and the FBI.

The spam email was trying to get customers to input their National ID and Internet Banking password into a fraudulent site. The url or internet address for the site was www.Barclayss.com.

This activity directed at the National follows other activity that has occurred in the financial services industry in recent times.

Customers are advised to not respond to the email or access the hyperlink contained in the email. They should also not provide any personal financial details.

Customers can check they are linked to NAB Internet Banking by:

  • Entering the National's legitimate website (www.nab.com.au) in the address bar.
  • Before logging on to NAB Internet Banking, ensure that the padlock - indicating a secure session - is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Customers can also voluntarily password lock their Internet Banking password before exiting a banking session. The customer's Internet Banking information can then only be accessed after the password is unlocked via the National's telephone banking service, using the customer's National ID and telephone banking password.

If customers have any concerns they are asked to call 13 22 65.
