Travelling with a credit card

Managing your money while you're away

While you're overseas you'll need to make sure that you still make your credit card repayments. Registering for NAB Internet Banking before you go can be a good way to manage your credit card account anytime, from anywhere in the world. You can pay bills instantly, transfer funds from another linked NAB account, and have access to up to 100 days of transaction history on all your linked accounts.

Wherever possible, you should try to avoid accessing NAB Internet Banking from a public computer. But if you need to while you are away, make sure you:

  • check the computer has current anti-virus and firewall protection, as Trojan viruses or spyware can steal passwords and account numbers
  • logout completely when you finish.

Complimentary insurances

NAB Gold and Platinum cardholders receive seven complimentary insurances. From the 1st of June 2011, when you purchase a minimum of $500 of your pre paid transportation costs (including by air, rail, road or watercraft) and/or accommodation and/or organised land tour costs all of which are inclusive of any charges, fees and/or taxes on your NAB Gold or Platinum Card, you could be covered if your overseas travel is cancelled, or you suffer from illness or become disabled while you're travelling overseas.

There's also cover for lost luggage and documents, rental vehicle accidents, some missed connections.

Optional insurances

NAB Travel Insurance

Unexpected events can happen when travelling. Travel with peace of mind, knowing that your NAB Travel Insurance policy is underwritten by Allianz Australia with customer service provided by Allianz Global Assistance, one of the largest assistance providers in the world.

Using non-chip credit cards overseas

You can use a credit card without a chip in the same locations as a chip credit card. However, in some countries you may be asked to use your PIN instead of signing to authorise your purchase or you may even be asked for both a PIN and a signature. For this reason, we recommend that you always know your PIN when travelling overseas.

You were sent a PIN when your NAB credit card was issued. If you can't remember your PIN, please call us on 13 22 65 or visit any NAB branch.

Travelling to the UK and Europe

If you're travelling to the UK or Europe with a non-chip credit card, you shouldn't be concerned about card acceptance. Merchants should continue to accept foreign-issued, non-chip cards. In addition, payment terminals being used in the UK and Europe can identify a non-chip card. The terminal will know if a PIN or signature is required and will provide prompts accordingly.

Purchase Protection Insurance

Use your card to pay for a new personal retail item in full and if it's lost, stolen or accidentally damaged any time in the next 90 days you're covered for the cost of repairing or replacing it.

There are some limits and exclusions – see the Purchase Protection Insurance Policy Document (PDF 168kb). This insurance is supplied by Chubb Insurance Company of Australia.
