National Australia Bank (NAB) today announced the appointment of Spiro Pappas as Chief Executive Officer, Asia, responsible for accelerating the growth of NAB's business in Asia.
Spiro will be responsible for managing NAB's operations in Asia and strengthening the franchise in close coordination with the Bank's businesses in Australia and New Zealand.
NAB Group CEO Cameron Clyne said he is delighted with the appointment of Spiro who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role.
"Flows of trade, people and capital between Asia, Australia and New Zealand have grown exponentially and are showing no signs of abating. NAB has long recognised this trend and has been investing in the growth of our Asian operations for over 40 years.
"As one of NAB's most senior bankers, with over 23 years of international and domestic financial services experience, Spiro is extremely well placed to drive the NAB's strategy in Asia," said Cameron. NAB Asia CEO Spiro Pappas said he is looking forward to the challenge of the role and expanding NAB's presence in Asia.
"NAB has a solid foundation in Asia which I am looking forward to continuing to expand in my new role as CEO of NAB Asia.
"NAB has always focused on supporting customers through our strong relationship driven approach and I am committed to bringing the best of our expertise and services to our customers, as our intraregional trade and investment flows continue to grow in strength," said Spiro.
NAB first established its presence in Asia through a representative office in Tokyo in 1969. Today, it has branches in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka (sub-branch) and Mumbai, as well as representative offices in Beijing and Jakarta.
Spiro joined NAB in 2009 as the Head of the Institutional Bank, with global responsibility covering its Large Corporates, Multi-Nationals, the Commercial Real Estate, Government and Education sectors and Acquisition Finance and Advisory businesses.
Prior to joining NAB, Spiro spent over 13 years internationally in London and New York, including 11 years with ABN AMRO Bank where he managed a number of global businesses including Debt Capital Markets, Client Coverage for Banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions and Corporate Finance and Advisory. He also served as part of the global management team for Credit Markets, Traded Markets and Financial Institutions and Portfolio Management. Prior to ABN AMRO, Mr. Pappas worked for Deutsche Bank in Sydney, New York and London.
In addition, NAB's Global Head of Consumers Sectors, David Thorn, will relocate from Sydney to Hong Kong in December 2012. David is the first global industry sector head in NAB's Institutional Banking division to be located in Asia, signalling a further step in NAB's strategic approach to supporting the Bank's clients in the Asian region.
David will play a key role in supporting NAB's business customers, particularly in food and beverage production and related agricultural sectors, with growth opportunities in the Asian region. He will also be pivotal in ensuring that NAB's Asian clients continue to grow their trade and investment flows with Australian and New Zealand businesses. David has over 25 years' banking experience and has been leading NAB's Consumer Sectors team for approximately seven years.
