Les Matheson

Les Matheson was appointed as Group Executive, Digital, Data and Chief Operating Officer in November 2023, having previously served as Group Chief Operating Officer from January 2021. Les has nearly 30 years of experience in banking and finance across Europe and Asia Pacific.

As Group Executive, Digital, Data and Chief Operating Officer, Les is responsible for the Digital, Data & Analytics division as well as ubank, Group Marketing and Product Improvement & Governance.

Before joining NAB, Les was CEO of the Retail Bank at RBS and was also responsible for Ulster Bank across Ireland. In this role, he led the evolution of the business to an agile model and developed and delivered a strong range of innovative products and services.

Prior to RBS, Les spent most of his banking career at Citigroup in Australia and the Asia Pacific where his roles included Citigroup Country Officer for Australia and Citigroup Retail CEO for Australia. He was also a member of the Citigroup Global Management Committee.

Les started his career with Procter & Gamble in brand management in the UK. Les was also Deputy Chairman at the ABA, Deputy Chairman of the FCA’s Practitioner Panel (UK), a Director of Visa Europe and a past member of the Edinburgh University Court.

From this global experience, Les brings deep knowledge of what it means to deliver for customers and colleagues as well as strong leadership skills.

Les holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from Edinburgh University. He is also a Certified Bank Director (The Institute of Bankers UK) and a Fellow of the Chartered Bankers Institute (UK).
