Opening a new personal account
Open a Classic Banking account
Before you apply
It should take you less than 10 minutes to apply for an account online. You can apply for most of our accounts online so long as you're at least 18 years old.
We'll give you a checklist of things you should have with you before you apply (it changes, depending on the account). It's a good idea to have your tax file number (TFN) handy when you apply. If you're already a NAB customer, make sure you have your NAB ID, too.
If you're new to NAB you'll have to see us in a branch (after we’ve opened your account) with 100 points of identification. This is a legal requirement.
For most accounts you have the option of making a joint application with one other person.

Opening an account from overseas
If you're coming to Australia to live, work or study, apply for an Australian bank account before you arrive here.
NAB Retirement Accounts, NAB Concession Card Accounts, and NAB Smart Junior Saver Accounts
Because of the extra documents we need to check for eligibility you can't open these accounts online. Instead you can:
- call us on 13 13 12 from 7am-9pm Mon-Fri, or 8am-9pm on weekends (AEST/AEDT)
- see us in any branch.
After you apply online
We'll automatically email you within 60 seconds of receiving your application. We'll tell you if there's anything else you need to do, and what steps we'll take to open your account.
Once we've opened your account we'll send you another email, and also post you a Welcome Pack with all the information you need about your new account.
If your account includes a debit card, we'll post the card and PIN separately. Usually we'll send them directly to you, but you might need to pick them up from your nearest branch.
New to NAB?
After we've opened your account, you'll have to visit a NAB branch with 100 points of ID. This is a legal requirement. Until we've seen your ID you can't take money out of your account (although you can make deposits into it).
Acceptable ID includes your passport, driver's licence, and birth certificate.
