Assessing your application

  • To assess your credit card application, we’ll need to verify your income, liabilities and identity details.
  • What we need to check varies depending on the type of income you’ve told us you have.
  • You only need to provide proof of income when your income is not directly deposited into a NAB account.

How to verify your income

You can provide your verification documents in one of three ways:

  • Register or login to NAB Internet Banking on a desktop computer and upload your documents using the Applications tab.
  • Send an email to application.fulfilment@nab.com.au with your income documents attached as a PDF or photo. Please include your reference number in the subject line.
  • Take your documents into your local branch.

Note: All documents need to be either in English or translated by an NAATI, opens in new window accredited professional translation service.

Documents to verify your income

Salary

Verify your salary with one of the following:

  • bank statement or transaction listing showing your last two salary deposits
  • a payslip showing your year-to-date income for at least two pay cycles
  • two of your last three payslips.

Ensure your most recent payslip or salary deposit is:

  • no older than 45 days for weekly, fortnightly, bi-monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for payments greater than monthly.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

If you’ve just started a new job and don’t have enough payslips yet, you can provide either:

  • a letter from your employer detailing your employment arrangement (i.e. your pay, full time, part time or casual)
  • your signed employment contract

Overtime and/or commission income

Verify your overtime and/or commission income with one of the following:

  • a payslip that shows your year-to-date overtime for at least six months
  • if your payslip shows a year-to-date overtime of less than six months, you can provide:
    • your PAYG payment summary, income statement or personal tax return for the last financial year
    • a signed employment contract or letter of offer detailing the regular overtime or commission as a condition of your employment.

Ensure your most recent payslip is:

  • no older than 45 days for weekly, fortnightly, or bi-monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for monthly payments.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Bonus income

Verify your bonus income for the last two financial years with one of the following:

  • bank statements or transaction listings showing the payment received
  • payslips detailing your payments received
  • a reward statement from your employer with details about your bonus payments for the past two years
  • a signed letter from your employer detailing the bonus amounts received
  • your PAYG payment summary, income statements or personal tax returns.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Casual income (including Defence Force Income)

Verify your casual income with one of the following:

  • a payslip showing your year-to-date income for at least two pay cycles
  • bank statement or transaction listing showing your last two salary deposits

If your year-to-date income figure on your payslip is for less than two cycles, please provide one of the below instead:

  • your latest PAYG payment summary for the last financial year
  • your personal tax return for the last financial year.

Ensure your most recent payslip or salary deposit is:

  • no older than 45 days for weekly, fortnightly, bi-monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for payments greater than monthly.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Self-employed

You can verify your self-employed income with one of the following:

  • an ATO Notice of Assessment (NOA) issued within the last two financial years
  • your financial statements (e.g. taxation returns) that covers two consecutive financial years ( include the most recent issued within the last 24 months)  

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer and your ABN (where applicable).

Australian Government Allowances

Verify your government allowance with one of the following:

  • your latest bank statement or transaction listing from the last 90 days, showing three months of consecutive allowances payments
  • a letter or statement from the government authority or agency that’s made a payment in the last 90 days.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your government authority, agency or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Child support

Verify your child support and/or maintenance payments with:

  • the maintenance agreement or child support assessment notice registered with the Child Support Agency, confirming the nature of payments
  • bank statement, transaction listing or Child Support Agency online payment history showing consecutive payments over at least a six-month period.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your agency or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

New rental income

Verify your new rental income with one of the following:

  • A market appraisal from a registered real estate agent. (Note: market appraisals must be on the agent’s letterhead, state the property address, and be signed and dated no later than 90 days from the date of application.
  • A current executed lease agreement. Note that lease agreements must confirm the property owner, address of the property, frequency and amount of rental income or prospective rental income.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your agency and your ABN (where applicable).

Existing rental income

Verify your rental income with one of the following:

  • a current signed rental/lease agreement including the property address
  • your latest rental statement(s) from the past 90 days, showing at least four consecutive weeks rental payments and printed on your real estate agent’s letterhead
  • bank statement or transaction listing for the last 90 days, showing at least two consecutive rental income deposits
  • a rental property schedule contained in a tax return, either prepared by a tax agent or with evidence it was lodged with the Australian Tax Office.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your agency or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Existing holiday rental income (e.g. AirBnB)

If applicable, verify your existing holiday rental income with the following:

  • an annual statement or document issued by the Australian Tax Office/tax agent or the managing agent/company including the property address and amount received for a minimum of 12 months

Shared space income (e.g. Individual room rental)

If applicable, verify your shared space income with the following:

  • a document issued by the Australian Tax Office/tax agent, including the property address and the amount of rental income received covering a full financial year ending 30 June of the most recent financial year

Superannuation income

Verify your superannuation income with one of the following:

  • your most recent bank statement or transaction listings from the last 90 days, where received as a weekly, fortnightly or monthly payment/s
  • your most recent bank or superannuation fund statements from the last 12-month period, where payments are received quarterly, half yearly or yearly
  • financial statements or an equivalent (e.g. self-managed superannuation fund tax return) for the last financial year
  • a letter from your financial planner or advisor detailing regular payments from your superannuation investment. Note that information must cover the time period in line with the payment frequency details listed above.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your financial planner or adviser name or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Income from assets

Verify your investment income with one of the following (as applicable):

  • a shareholding certificate, current dividend statement or notice
  • most recent managed fund statement or notice
  • your latest bank statement or transaction listing, showing at least two direct credits as investment income
  • a share registry advice confirming investment details
  • a term deposit certificate
  • a letter from a financial planner 
  • your most recent tax return.

Documents to be:

  • no older than 90 days for documents issued weekly, fortnightly, monthly or bi-monthly
  • no older than 12 months for documents issued quarterly or greater

Except for bank statements and transaction listings, all documents need to include either:

  • the name of the publicly listed company where the investment is held
  • the specific name and type of investment

Make sure all documents show your full name and your ABN (where applicable).

Foreign currency (PAYG) income

Verify your foreign currency PAYG income from the following:

  • a letter from your employer or the employment contract which confirms your employment status , employment start date and income, and 
  • consecutive individual payslips for a minimum 60-day period for full-time or part-time or for contract-based over a 180 day period
  • bank statement(s) that reconcile with the amounts of the payslips.

Ensure your most recent payslip or salary deposit is:

  • no older than 45 days for weekly, fortnightly or bi-monthly payments 
  • no older than 90 days for monthly payments
  • no older than 90 days for payments greater than monthly.

Make sure all documents show your full name, your employer or institution name and your ABN (where applicable).

Verify your identity at a NAB branch

To verify your identity at a NAB branch, you’ll need to bring along identification documents. Please ensure all documents are originals and not photocopies.

Acceptable identification documentation combinations are as follows:

  • one primary photographic identification document
  • one primary non-photographic identification document and one secondary identification document.

Primary photographic identification

  • Australian driver’s licence containing a photograph of the person 
  • Australian passport (a passport that has expired within the last two years is acceptable)  
  • Card issued under a state or territory for the purpose of proving a person’s age containing a photograph of the person 
  • Foreign passport containing a photograph of the person
  • Foreign driver’s licence that contains a photograph of the person in whose name it’s issued and the individual’s date of birth
  • National identity card issued by a foreign government

Primary non-photographic identification

  • Australian birth certificate 
  • Australian citizenship certificate 
  • Australian Pension card, Health Care card or Seniors Health card
  • Foreign birth certificate
  • Foreign citizenship certificate

Secondary identification

  • Financial benefits statement that is less than 12 months old 
  • Australian Taxation Office (ATO) notice of assessment that is less than 12 months old
  • Australian issued rates notice, utility bill or registration notice that has been issued in the last three months
  • Letter issued by school principal within the preceding three months (must have a letterhead or logo of the institute for those under 18 years)
