Compare comprehensive car insurance and third-party car insurance

Under our car insurance policies, there are two levels of cover to choose from: comprehensive or third-party property damage insurance. You will need to decide what level of cover is right for you.

These policy overviews are a guide only. For information on the full coverage, exclusion, limits and excesses, read the NAB Car Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDF, 616KB), opens in new window and the NAB Financial Services Guide before applying.

In order to be sure that you are covered under this policy you should always contact us for approval before you incur expenses you wish to claim. If you do not, we will pay for expenses incurred to the amount we would have authorised had you asked us first.

Comprehensive car insurance overview

Comprehensive car insurance covers damage caused to your car by others as well as damage you may cause to other vehicles. It may also cover property damage, depending on your policy.

What’s included

  • Our highest level of cover which covers you for loss or damage to your vehicle caused by fire, theft, accidents and malicious damage.

  • It also covers your legal liability for loss or damage caused by a motor vehicle accident which is partly or fully your fault.

What’s excluded

  • If your vehicle was driven by a driver who is unlicensed, suspended or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • If your vehicle was in an unsafe or un-roadworthy condition.

  • If you were carrying passengers for hire, fare or reward unless you have declared your car is used for rideshare or your employer pays you a travel allowance and you are in a private pooling arrangement.

  • For your own deliberate, intentional, malicious or criminal acts.

  • If damage is caused by flood, bush fire, or cyclones occurring in the first 72 hours after you take out a policy.

Third-party property damage insurance overview

Third-party property damage insurance is different from Compulsory Third Party insurance (CTP). CTP is mandatory for vehicle registration in Australia, and can be called something different depending on the state or territory you are registering your vehicle in.

What's included

  • Provides cover for loss or damage to someone else's property caused by a motor vehicle accident which is partly or fully your fault.
