What is Visa Secure?

Visa has recently enhanced its security for online purchases making the experience seamless and simpler. Along with these enhancements, Visa has rebranded the name from Verified by Visa to Visa Secure.

Visa Secure is a service that provides you with increased protection from potential fraud for online shopping.

Together with participating retailers, Visa Secure provides you with an additional layer of validation at the time of purchase that helps protect against unauthorised use of NAB Visa credit and debit cards. This service is free for NAB Customers.

Protection is provided to you for online purchases, where you may be guided through an extra check to verify your identity. For reassurance, look out for the Visa Secure logo displayed on participating retailers’ website with online shopping options.

You can still shop online with non-participating retailers using your NAB credit or debit card, however, your purchase will proceed without the extra layer of security offered by Visa Secure.

Do I need to register my card for Visa Secure?

No, there is no need for any registration. All you need to do is to make sure you have downloaded the NAB app and/or have a valid mobile number registered with NAB, so you can receive your secret code. For more information go to Travel notifications.

What should I do when I receive a “Payment Authentication” screen during an online payment?

A “Payment Authentication” screen may appear shortly after you attempt to complete an online purchase. This verification helps ensure the person using your card is you, and protect you from potential fraud. To verify your identity, NAB will send you a secret code to your preferred device. This secret code is required to be entered on the Payment Authentication screen and, if successful, will complete the authentication.

If you are making an online purchase with a NAB Corporate card, you may be asked to use Online Shopping ID (OSID). Your OSID is located on the back of your NAB card and can be found above the magnetic stripe.

What happens if I don’t receive my secret code?

You can check your messages on your device to determine if the secret code is received.

The mobile phone number stored with NAB might be different from your current number. To change your mobile number, please call the NAB contact phone number on the back of your card.

Can I still use my NAB Visa credit or debit card at online retailers that are not participating in this program?

Yes, your NAB Visa credit or debit card will continue to work as usual. The only difference being the extra protection provided by Visa Secure will not apply. Your transaction will still be protected by existing multiple layers of security and zero liability for fraudulent purchases.

Does Visa Secure cost me anything?

Visa Secure is a free service for NAB Customers.

How can I be sure that an online retailer website is a secure site and my data is not being compromised?

It is important that when you are purchasing online and providing card and personal information, that you do so on a site that you recognise.

To increase card security when shopping online you should ensure the following:

  • Only shop online at secure websites - look for the padlock at the bottom of your screen before entering any personal information.
  • Look for reputable online retailers or stores. If you are unsure of the business or their online security then ask for more information before using their service.
  • Ensure that your computer has current anti-virus and firewall protection.
  • Print out copies of online receipts or take a screen-shot of the online transaction receipt to make it easier to check your statement.

What should I do if I suspect someone has used my card to make a fraudulent purchase?

If you suspect a fraudulent purchase has been made using your NAB credit or debit card, you should contact NAB using the number on the back of your card as soon as you can.

What happens when I am overseas and I am shopping online?

NAB recommends you visit the informative travel page before your departure date. This page includes important security information, including advise about our NAB app.

NAB recommends using the NAB app when traveling overseas as it provides a reliable method of receiving important notifications, such as your secret code.
