About Markets

Our Markets team use sales, trading and research expertise to provide local and offshore customers with access to both traded and illiquid markets, including fixed income, money markets, credit, derivatives, currencies and commodities. This includes trading between all types of banks, superannuation funds and domestic and multi-national companies. Our business covers every segment of the corporate and investor markets, from global supranationals through to high net worth customers looking to build their investment portfolio.

Our Markets graduate roles are based in Melbourne and Sydney.

What we look for in Markets graduates

We’re looking for disciplined graduates who have a passion for building a career in areas like trading, sales, economic research or quantitative research. Graduates who are great communicators, enjoy solving quantitative problems, are comfortable working with numbers or code to find a solution, and are looking for a high level of personal ownership and learning agility. Graduates who want to be part of a dynamic environment where attention to detail, complex problem solving, and confidence are paramount.

Strong mathematics or programming skills (preferably C# or Python) are required for this role.

Graduates for this stream must have a degree or major in one of the following areas:

Our teams

Markets is made up of a variety of specialised teams. Below are examples of teams where you may complete a rotation.

Foreign Exchange (FX)

Spot FX are used by customers as hedges to protect themselves against changes in FX rates, refine their risk profiles or speculate on FX moves. Our FX team is a leading provider of foreign exchange products in the Australian and New Zealand markets, and a major liquidity provider in all G10 currencies.

Interest Rate (IR) Derivatives

IR Derivatives are used by customers as hedges to protect themselves against changes in market interest rates, refine their risk profiles or to speculate on rate moves. NAB is recognised as a leading market-maker and liquidity provider in the Australian and New Zealand dollar interest rate markets.

Commodities

We provide customers with solutions to manage their exposure to commodity price movements, along with structured commodity investment opportunities.

Market Solutions

Our Markets Solutions team works closely with our customers on opportunities to improve yield outcomes, reduce costs, access collateral and protect capital.

X-Value Adjustment (XVA)

The XVA team centralises valuation adjustments on derivatives across the business to hedge credit and funding risks and determine capital requirements under bank capital adequacy rules.

Quantitative Research (QR)

QR provides quantitative solutions to Markets and other business areas across several asset classes. The solutions delivered range from front office tools or apps, to quantitative infrastructure to bespoke analysis and consultation services.

Investor Sales

Our team covers clients with an ‘investor’ profile including banks, sovereigns, asset managers, hedge funds, superannuation firms and high net worth individuals. We bring a complete enterprise-to-enterprise approach involving product and platform solutions across fixed income, FX, derivatives, structured products and deposits.

Research

Research provides coverage of the Australian and New Zealand economies, as well as analysis and trading strategies for foreign exchange, fixed income and commodities. You may be familiar with their podcast The Morning Call, which is extremely popular with clients and other market participants.

The work you'll do in Markets

Use your skills to support local and global customers across the sales, trading, economic and quantitative research functions within our financial markets business.

  • Provide technical, analytical, administrative and direct client support.
  • Analyse data to derive innovative insights and perform market analysis.
  • Develop an ongoing awareness and understanding of global markets, market dynamics and risk appetites.
  • Contribute to complex financial models to evaluate hedging strategies.
  • Develop and contribute to programming solutions for problems the business faces, including involvement with trading tools and e-trading processes.
  • Get involved with industry research, insights presentations, strategic initiatives, transformation programs and regulatory responses.
