We measure the value we’re returning to the community so we can make the most of our investment.
Why is this important?
Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have the oldest continuous culture in the world, something in which all Australians should take pride.
Working together with Indigenous Australia, we are helping to strengthen financial resilience, increase business and employment opportunities, and develop NAB’s cultural capabilities. In turn, this helps improve life outcomes in economic empowerment, employment, and education for Indigenous Australians, and a better future for all of us.
What do we do?
Our commitment to Indigenous Australians has been guided by our Reconciliation Action Plans which cover economic participation, employment and career development, and cultural understanding. As we develop our work, we have an ongoing commitment to getting our results independently assured. Read our full 2019 -2021 Reconciliation Action Plan (PDF, 4.85 MB) and accessible version of Reconciliation Action Plan (DOCX, 1.37MB).
Committed to fee-free accounts
Access to a transaction account enables people to store money and send and receive payments, and is the most basic requirement for financial inclusion. With the NAB Classic Banking Account, our Indigenous customers have easy access to their money, with no monthly account service fees. Find out more about the NAB Classic Banking Account.
Providing fair and affordable loans
Our financial inclusion program provides access to fair, affordable microfinance to enable Indigenous Australians to take control of their finances. In 2020, over 6,900 safe and affordable microfinance products and services were accessed by Indigenous Australians. Find out more about how NAB works with Good Shepherd to help to provide access to no and low interest loans and how we are improving financial resilience.
Supporting financial inclusion for Indigenous customers
NAB is committed to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers can continue to better access financial services, including our banking services. To help support this, NAB has created a dedicated customer service line, to better support access for Indigenous Australians, particularly those who live in remote parts of Australia. To access this support line, customers may call the Indigenous Customer Service Line directly on 1800 966 100.
Growing a pipeline of Indigenous talent
We know that having meaningful employment improves many aspects of an individual’s life. At NAB, we’re committed to offering a range of employment options, including school-based and full-time traineeships, internships, and general recruitment for Indigenous Australians. Find out more about our different Indigenous employment streams.
Supporting Indigenous business
As one of Australia’s largest businesses, we have large impact with our purchasing power. That’s why we’re committed to growing Indigenous representation in our supplier chain, and continuing to purchase from, and support the growth of, Indigenous businesses.
Reconciliation Action Plans
We have had eight Reconciliation Action Plans since 2008, each more ambitious than the last. Read more about our ongoing work in our Elevate Reconciliation Action Plan.
