What are regular payments?

Regular payments are any payments you make at a scheduled and repeated frequency. You can set them up to:

  • transfer money between your NAB accounts
  • make payments to anyone, which is known as ‘Pay anyone’
  • pay bills with BPAY
  • allow a company or biller to take money from your transaction account, known as a ‘direct debit’
  • allow a company or biller to charge your debit card or credit card, known as a ‘recurring payment’.

The benefits of setting up regular payments

When you set up a regular payment, it gives you peace of mind knowing you won’t forget to pay. When you don’t miss payments for things like rent, credit cards or utility bills it’s easier to establish a good credit history and get a loan.

Regular payments can also save you time because once you’ve set up the first payment, the rest are processed automatically. Many people set up regular deposits to savings accounts to help them stick to a savings plan, or to a credit card to repay their balance.

Remember that you can’t set up a regular payment using someone’s PayID details.

How to set up a regular BPAY payment

Using the NAB app - new biller

  1. Select the account you want to pay from.
  2. Select Pay.
  3. Select Pay bills.
  4. Select New biller.
  5. Enter the biller code and reference number and select Continue.
  6. Select Pay when.
  7. Select Recurring to set up the regular payment.

Using the NAB app - existing biller

  1. Select the account you want to pay from.
  2. Select Pay.
  3. Select Pay bills.
  4. Choose an existing biller, enter the amount and select Pay when.
  5. Select Recurring to set up the regular payment.

Using NAB Internet Banking - new biller

  1. Select the Transfer & Pay menu.
  2. Select Payee List.
  3. Select Add biller.
  4. Enter the biller code and then select Next.
  5. Select the biller, enter the reference number and select Submit.
  6. Now complete the steps below for using ‘NAB Internet Banking - existing biller’ to make the payment.

Using NAB Internet Banking - existing biller

  1. Select the Transfer & Pay menu.
  2. Select Bill payment.
  3. Select the account you want to pay from, the biller and then select Next.
  4. Enter the amount then select Periodic payment to set up the regular bill payment.

How to set up a recurring payment

A regular payment from a debit card or credit card is called a recurring payment. You can set one up by allowing a merchant, company or biller to charge your debit or credit card. To do this you will need to supply them with your card number, expiry date and CVV number.

How to set up a direct debit

A regular payment from a transaction account is called a direct debit. You can set up a direct debit by allowing a merchant, company or biller to take money from your account using your BSB and account number.

Your responsibilities with regular payments

If you have a regular payment set up and your bank account details change, it's your responsibility to tell the biller. It’s also up to you to update them when your credit or debit card expiry dates change.

You should keep copies of all your regular payment agreements. We also recommend you keep copies of any notifications you've sent to payees asking them to change your account details or cancel payments.

How to dispute a regular payment

If you see a regular payment on your bank statement that you don’t think you set up or is for an incorrect amount, you may be able to dispute it. Always try to contact the company first before sending in a transaction dispute.
