On 27 March 2021, the Australian Government announced that businesses who have been impacted by flooding in NSW can also apply for lending under the SME Recovery Loan Scheme. Natural Disasters: What to do and when

With many Australians facing an increased threat of natural disasters, more of our customers are looking for specialised support. To help them prepare and overcome these new threats, we’re investing in providing additional support to inform customers of what they can do before, during and after a natural disaster.

Responding to a disaster - You have our support

  • We know that picking up the pieces is never easy. And natural disasters and crises can leave you with unexpected financial stress.
  • Customers who are experiencing financial hardship can visit their nearest open NAB branch, contact their banker directly or call NAB Assist on 1800 701 599 (8am-8pm Mon-Fri, or 9am-1pm on Saturdays AEST/AEDT).
  • Small business affected by bushfire can call the government Small Business Bushfire Financial Counselling Support Line on 1800 413 828.
  • If you have NAB home and contents insurance, and you need help with a claim or an inquiry about it, please call the insurer on 132 928.
  • If you have NAB car insurance, and you need help with a claim or an inquiry about it, please call the insurer on 132 928.
  • NAB EFTPOS and HICAPS merchants that need help can call the Merchant Helpdesk on 1300 369 852 (between 7am-7pm AEST).

Preparing for a natural disaster

From fire to flood, no two disasters are the same. But there are some preparations that you can make to cover your bases. Below are some common yearly practices you can do to prepare yourself, your home or your business.

Know your emergency plan.

A good understanding of your emergency plan means you can carry it out quickly if natural disaster strikes. Write and practise your evacuation plan for each disaster scenario for your location. Learn how to turn off your electricity, water and gas, and locate the safest room in the house to take shelter. The Australian Red Cross has guidance on how to create an emergency plan.

Prepare an emergency kit.

Disasters like flood or bushfire can happen fast. You should have an emergency kit in a safe place, ready to go for the kind of scenarios that could potentially affect you. Not sure where to start? No problem. Australian Red Cross has a checklist of the items you should consider packing.

Ready your home.

Check that your home or business is as disaster proof as possible using the Australian Red Cross’ app Get Prepared, available on the App Store* and Google Play^. It’s important to maintain your garden, clear your gutters, down pipes and drains. Have a roofing expert check the condition of your roof and fix any broken tiles. Remove flammable items and check that water sources and hoses are accessible.

Check that your home, car or personal items are insured properly for different types of natural disasters. View our insurance options.

Ready your business.

Check that your business insurance covers you in the event of a disaster. It’s also worth having your paperwork and business information transferred and stored digitally online. Find out more about our business insurance partnerships.

Safety first.

It’s important not to take unnecessary risks when faced with a natural disaster. Regardless of what you own, nothing is more precious than your life and the lives of others. In the event of flood, bushfire, cyclone and severe weather please follow the advice of your local emergency services.

Set a reminder.

Any year that you avoid encountering a natural disaster is a good one. But your emergency plans and supplies need to be checked or revisited at least once a year. Set a reminder for the quieter months and review your current plans. That way you’re always ready and informed when disaster season rolls around again.

Get informed and stay safe

Whether it’s before or during the disaster season, you can always access the most up-to-date information and essential services through specialist natural disaster organisations such as Australian Red Cross, your local emergency services organisations and local radio station.
