How to make an international payment

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A SWIFT Code also referred to as Bank Identifier Code (BIC) is an international code which identifies banks which send and receive international payments.

  • No. A SWIFT Code or BIC is the code used on the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) messaging network to identify banks. The term SWIFT code and BIC are used interchangeably.

  • A SWIFT Code (BIC) identifies the payee’s bank for an international payment without having to enter other details such as the bank’s name and address as part of the payment. Without the correct code, the transfer may be delayed, rejected, returned, or misrouted.

  • You can check with the payment’s intended payee, the payee’s bank, or use NAB’s SWIFT Code (BIC) lookup to find or verify a SWIFT Code (BIC).

  • The SWIFT Code (BIC) lookup is a tool to help find or verify a SWIFT Code (BIC). You can find a code by selecting the country for the payment, payee’s bank, city and address (optional). You can also verify the bank details against a code you already have.

  • The SWIFT Code (BIC) tool can be used before submitting an international payment if you don't know the SWIFT Code (BIC) for the payee’s bank.

  • The payment may be delayed, rejected, returned, or misrouted.

  • If you can’t find the Swift Code (BIC) in the lookup:

    • Check the correct Country has been selected matching where the international payment is being sent or received.
    • Simplify the bank name by entering partial words from the complete bank name while searching for the bank’s main name.
    • Check the correct City has been selected matching where the international payment is being sent or received.
    • Search without entering an Address. An address can be used to refine your search results if required.
    • Confirm the SWIFT Code (BIC) with the payment’s intended payee or payee’s bank.
  • If you’re unable to verify a SWIFT Code (BIC):

    • Ensure you’re entering a valid 8- or 11-character code.
    • Confirm there are no extra spaces or missing characters.
    • Confirm the code with the payment’s intended payee or payee’s bank.
