What to expect

Opening and using your account

  • Step 1

    Apply for a new NAB account online – it’s straightforward and takes around 10 minutes to complete.

  • Step 2

    Opening a bank account in Australia from overseas takes up to three business days – we’ll email you a welcome letter with your NAB account details.

  • Step 3

    You can now transfer funds to your NAB account and view your balance using NAB Internet Banking.

  • Step 4

    When you arrive in Australia, visit your NAB branch – we’ll check your identification and offer you a debit card for purchases.

  • Step 5

    After the branch, you’ll be good to go – welcome to Australia!

Here are some frequently asked questions

I’ve already arrived in Australia. Can I still apply through NAB’s migrant banking channel?

No unfortunately you can’t however you can apply to open an account by visiting a NAB branch. You can only apply through the migrant banking channel when opening a bank account in Australia from overseas.

Can I receive my NAB Debit Card before I arrive in Australia?

No, you can’t unfortunately. Your card can be ordered when you arrive at your nominated NAB branch in Australia.

How do I organise an appointment with a NAB banker when I arrive?

Your Welcome Letter, which you’ll receive by email after your account is opened, will contain the details of your nominated branch, and next steps you’ll need to take once you arrive in Australia.

Do I have to open both a NAB Classic Banking account and a NAB iSaver account together?

No, you don’t. You can simply open a NAB Classic Banking account. You can’t open a NAB iSaver account on its own, unfortunately, as it needs to be linked with a NAB Classic Banking account.

Can I give my Australian employer my account details before I arrive in Australia?

Yes, you can. You simply need to provide them with your new NAB account details, provided with your Welcome Letter, which you’ll receive by email after your account is opened.

How do I transfer money to my NAB Account?

You won’t be able to withdraw any money you deposit into your NAB Account until you present your ID in a NAB branch. You can deposit money into your account using International Money Transfer via your current bank or preferred money exchange. You will need your NAB account number, NAB SWIFT code (NATAAU3303M) and details for your nominated NAB branch (they’ll be in your Welcome Letter).
