Name: James Bentley
Your role: Manager, Natural Value in Corporate Responsibility
Region: Docklands, Victoria
What’s your story?
I lead NAB’s Natural Value strategy which is seeking to elevate the value of our natural capital – our water, soil, climate and biodiversity, into our business decisions.
I studied Environmental Science and Economics and have worked at the interface between business decisions and the use of environmental resources ever since.
How have you made a difference?
Off the back of research showing that our customers were concerned about energy risks we developed a product to offer them discounted equipment finance for assets that were energy efficient or renewable energy.
I’ve been really fortunate to support and see the roll out of this deal across the business. To date over 400 bankers have loaned $144m to hundreds of customers – that is not just good for the environment – it’s addressing a real business challenge – and those customers can now reinvest the savings into their businesses. Whether it’s a farm with a new efficient irrigation system or a green pub covered in solar panels, we now have literally hundreds of these amazing proof points where NAB has made a difference to our customers.
The first tranche has been really successful – and we are now rolling out the second.
What are you passionate about?
My greatest passion is driving awareness about the role that healthy environments can play in supporting a successful economy and society.
I’m lucky I get to bring my passion to work but this also affects my home life – I’ve converted our backyard from a concrete moonscape into a thriving blooming native garden and my weekends are typically spent exploring the great outdoors by kayak, bike or foot.
