Name: Maria Djuarto
Your role: Senior Consultant, Enablement
Region: Docklands, Victoria
What’s your story?
I am Chinese and was born in Indonesia. My parents sent me to Malaysia when I was 14 due to the civil unrest in the country, at that time. I continued high school and stayed there through to my second year of university. I came to Melbourne 13 years ago to pursue a different life and have never looked back. I consider myself lucky to have always been surrounded by different cultures throughout my life, as I enjoy learning and engaging with people from various walks of life.
How have you made a difference?
I have always loved puzzles since I was young so it’s no surprise that I love problem solving at work. I started at NAB eight years ago and have had great experience learning from multiple areas so far, including Finance, Transformation, Procurement, Outsourcing & Insourcing, Optimisation and Operations, and now Business Enablement. As much as I can, I leverage the skills I have learnt from one area to add value to the next.
I co-run a career management program for the African Australian Inclusion Program (AAIP) cohorts with a colleague which has been a truly rewarding experience.
What are you passionate about?
I am highly passionate about making a difference and I would like to see the world moving closer towards equality in my lifetime. When I grew up, learning my own language had the embedded risk of being harmed by others out of hatred as we belonged to a racial minority. There was a very clear division between the rich and the poor, even in the hospital system. Women earning more than their partners were frowned upon.
This is why I am passionate about making a difference in these areas. No matter what someone’s gender, race or status is, I believe everyone deserves an equal opportunity and to be treated with the same respect.
I’m also passionate about change and making something great even greater. Last but not least, I enjoy traveling and cooking.
