Meet Rafael

Name: Rafael Marini

Your role: Change Lead, Wealth Operations

Region: Docklands, Victoria

What’s your story?

I’ve been working at MLC for nine years and have held a number of different roles. The majority of my career has been in leadership across a number of different business units. I never intended to work in the corporate world and never saw myself working in an office. I am very outdoorsy and have a passion for being active, so when I decided to give the corporate thing a go, people thought I was mad. Having the privilege to develop as a leader within MLC has been both challenging and rewarding and I’ve loved everything about being able to drive engagement and developing people, whilst not taking it too seriously. I currently work within Wealth Operations and lead the change function. We exist to ensure that change lands safely for both our stakeholders and customers.

How have you made a difference?

A piece of advice that was given to me, which can be considered a contradiction when we speak about NAB Honour is that, “You are more important than the customer”. Taken at face value it doesn’t sound right but the meaning behind it does. If we are expected to live up to ever growing customer expectations and provide a service that stands apart from the rest, physically and mentally, we need to be the best versions of ourselves. If we are not the best versions of ourselves, how can we expect to go above and beyond for our customers? The biggest contribution I believe I have made is driving engagement within my team and allowing people to grow, learn and develop so they can be the best versions of themselves and in turn, deliver beyond expectations.

What are you passionate about?

I love being active, experiencing different cultures and getting together with family and friends over a delicious meal.
