Australian Signals Directorate’s top tips for Cyber Security Action Month

With a cyber crime report made every six minutes in Australia, staying cyber aware has never been more important. A few simple steps can go a long way in protecting yourself, your information, and those around you.

Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Add an extra layer of protection to your accounts, particularly your email, banking and social media accounts.

Recognise and report scams

Look out for unexpected requests, pressure to act quickly or unusual payment instructions. If something doesn’t feel right, stop and report it.

Use strong, unique passwords

Use a different password for every account. A trusted password manager can help you create and securely store them.

Back up important information

Keep secure copies of valuable information so they can be recovered if your device is lost, damaged or compromised.

Be cautious of unexpected emails, texts and links

Pause before clicking, opening an attachment or sharing information, even if the message appears to come from someone you know.

Review your privacy settings

Check who can see your information across your devices, applications and social media accounts, and only allow access that is necessary.

Keep devices and software updated

Install updates promptly to address known security weaknesses.  Keep automatic updates turned on where possible.

Think before you share

Consider how personal information, photos or location details could be used before posting them online.

Reporting suspicious activity

Report all suspicious NAB-branded emails and SMS to phish@nab.com.au or text 0476 220 003.

If you’re a NAB customer and believe you may have fallen victim to a scam, fraud or cybercrime, please call 13 22 65 immediately and ask for the Digital Fraud and Anti Scam Team.
