Everyday purchases reflect shifting consumer behaviour

Australians are embracing everyday pleasures and simple treats, with new NAB Economics data showing an increase in spending on personal enjoyment and wellbeing - even as cost-of-living pressures persist.

The latest NAB consumer analysis reveals that rather than cutting back entirely, many are choosing to spend on affordable extras and experiences that fit within their budgets.

Other key insights include:

  • Personal goods spending up 9.8% year-on-year: Australians are investing more in items that boost wellbeing, including toys, games, jewellery, cosmetics, and accessories
  • Café and restaurant spending up 8.2%: More people are choosing to dine out and enjoy social occasions with friends and family.
  • Recreation and personal services up 2.3% in October: Australians are embracing sports, wellness, and personal care activities.
  • Overall consumer spending up 7.1% year-on-year: A steady 0.7% increase month-on-month reflects continued confidence and optimism.

NAB Executive Kylie Young said Australians are making conscious choices to enjoy life’s simple pleasures, without losing sight of their budgets.

“We’re seeing more Australians say yes to small treats – be it a takeaway coffee, the new lipstick, or a Friday lunch- without blowing the budget,” Ms Young said.

“After putting in the hard work to save, it’s encouraging to see people feeling comfortable enough with their budgeting skills to enjoy those small rewards, while still keeping an eye on the bigger financial picture.”
