NAB banker assists customer in branch
Key points
· NAB strengthening fight against identity fraud with next-gen encryption technology.
· Customers benefit with faster, safer identity checks.
· Technology to expand beyond Queensland, based on state-by-state readiness.
As identity fraud and scams become increasingly sophisticated, NAB is providing customers with a simpler and more secure way to confirm their identity, becoming the first Australian bank to announce tamper-proof encrypted identity verification in branch.
Launching in selected Queensland branches this month, the new capability allows customers to securely share information from their Queensland mobile drivers licence directly with NAB, securely transferring the information without any manual data entry or physical documentation required.
Customers who choose to use the service simply open their Queensland digital driver licence to share it with their banker. After the customer reviews and approves the information request, their licence details are securely shared directly from their device to NAB via automated, secure data exchange.
Queensland first
The technology rollout is starting in Queensland, the first state to offer a stronger, internationally recognised encryption standard for its mobile driver’s licence, which meets NAB’s security and technical requirements. NAB plans to progressively extend the capability to other states as compatible technology and solutions become available.
NAB Executive, Onboarding & Identity Management Claire Righetti said the technology would be a win-win for NAB customers.
“We’re making it easier and safer for our customers and harder for would-be criminals,” Ms Righetti said.
“With just a few taps, customers can share tamper-proof, verifiable credentials directly from their mobile device, which is more secure and faster than manual data entry or using physical documents.
“Introducing simpler and more secure ways for customers to verify their identity is an important part of improving the banking experience.”
The latest addition builds on NAB enabling its ‘Take a Selfie’ biometric verification feature into onboarding processes to confirm a customer matches their identity document.
Staying one step ahead
NAB Head of Identity Management Si Phan said leading the adoption of secure digital identity solutions showed NAB’s commitment to making banking safer and more convenient in the face of increasingly sophisticated AI-powered threats and scams.
“The threat environment is constantly changing which means we need to continually innovate to protect our customers,” Mr Phan said.
“We know identity theft is often the first step criminals use to carry out scams and fraud, so adopting digital identity technology gives our customers an easier way to verify their identity and helps us protect them and the financial system from increasingly sophisticated threats.
“We look forward to working with the states and relevant authorities to expand the use of this technology so more customers can benefit in more ways.”
Notes
· Available in selected Queensland NAB branches.
· Uses the Queensland Government digital driver licence app and ISO/IEC 18013-5 encryption standard for secure device-to-device transfer of information.
· Customers will still be able to verify identification using physical documents.
