Things to know about transferring money within Australia

  • To transfer funds, you’ll need to be set up for SMS security.  
  • Processing times for transfers will differ depending on the type of funds transfer you make.
  • Information you enter in the Description field (optional) will appear on both your statement and the payee’s statement so you can both identify what the transaction was for.
  • Daily limits apply to some online payments and transfers.

Steps to send a one-off payment

Transferring money to someone’s Australian bank account is safe and easy using the Pay anyone function in online banking.

NAB app

Instructions for mobile devices

  1. Log into the NAB app.

  2. Tap Transfer & pay. If you’re using an Android phone, tap the Menu icon first.

  3. Tap the account you want to transfer from.

  4. Tap Pay anyone.

  5. Select a saved payee or tap +BSB & Acc if it’s your first time paying someone.

  6. Enter the payee’s Account nameBSB number, and Account number.

  7. You can Save payee and add a nickname to make future payments quicker.

  8. Add a Reference (optional), then tap Continue.

  9. You’ll receive a security code via SMS or push notification. Enter the security code and tap Continue.

  10. The payee is now added. Enter the Amount, Reference and Description (optional).

  11. Pay when is set to today by default. To schedule a later payment, tap Pay when. Tap Next to continue.

  12. You may receive a protect yourself from fraud message if your payment has indications of a potential scam. You can review the details before you continue, change or cancel your payment.

  13. Carefully check all details are correct, then tap Pay now.

  14. Authorise the payment by entering your password or passcode.

  15. You’ll see a payment receipt. Tap Share receipt to send to the payee for their records.

NAB Internet Banking

Instructions for web browsers

  1. Log into NAB Internet Banking with your 8 to 10-digit NAB ID and password.

  2. Select Transfer & Pay, then 'Pay anyone' from the drop-down menu.

  3. Select the account to transfer from in the drop-down menu.

  4. Select either Saved payee or New payee to make a payment to someone.

  5. When making a payment to a Saved payee, select a previously saved payee in the drop-down list.

  6. When making a payment to a New payee, select ‘BSB & Acc’ as the Payment type.

  7. Enter the relevant payment details and ensure the BSB is validated.

  8. Select ‘Today’ as the Pay when option.

  9. Enter the Amount, Reference (optional) and Description (optional).

  10. Select Next.

  11. You may receive a ‘Protect yourself from fraud’ message if your payment has indications of a potential scam. You can review the details before you continue, change or cancel your payment.

  12. Check the funds transfer details are correct.

  13. Select Pay now.

  14. You may receive a security code via SMS or push notification.

  15. Select Submit.

  16. You have now transferred money within Australia.

  17. Save and share your payment receipt by tapping the printer icon.

Steps to send a faster one-off payment with a PayID® 

Transferring money to someone is faster and easier than ever. Simply use their unique PayID® , which could be their mobile number, email address or ABN.

NAB app

Instructions for mobile devices

  1. Log into the NAB app on your device.

  2. Tap Transfer & Pay (or Pay in Android).

  3. Select the account you’d like to make a payment from.

  4. Tap Pay anyone.

  5. Tap Mobile/PayID.

  6. Select the PayID® type, such as a phone number.

  7. Enter the PayID® details. 

  8. The name the PayID® is registered to will appear. If this is correct, tap Continue.

  9. Enter the payment amount. Add a reference or description if required. Tap Next.

  10. You may receive a protect yourself from fraud message if your payment has indications of a potential scam. You can review the details before you continue, change or cancel your payment.

  11. Check all payment details are correct. Tap Pay now.

  12. Authorise the payment with your passcode or internet banking password.

  13. You’ve successfully made a PayID® payment. Tap Share receipt to share the receipt with the receiver.

  5. Select PayID® type, such as mobile, email, ABN/ACN or Org ID.

  6. Enter the relevant payment details and verify the PayID® to continue.

  7. Enter the Amount, Reference (optional) and Description (optional).

  8. Select Next.

  9. You may receive a ‘Protect yourself from fraud’ message if your payment has indications of a potential scam. You can review the details before you continue, change or cancel your payment.

  10. Check the funds transfer details are correct.

  11. Select Pay now.

  12. You may receive a security code via SMS or push notification.

  13. Select Submit.

  14. You have now transferred money within Australia.

  15. Save and share your payment receipt by tapping the printer icon.
