Your banking travel checklist - NAB
1. Make sure you can get notifications
Check your personal details are up to date
Use the NAB app to update your personal details such as email address, mailing address and mobile number so we can easily contact you while you’re overseas if we need to.
Tell us you’re going overseas before you leave
To keep your cards active, it’s important you let us know when and where you’re travelling. Add your travel plans in the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking and make sure to turn on Travel mode in the NAB app so you can use tools like the ATM finder and foreign currency exchange calculator.
Turn on push notifications
Turn on push notifications so you’re alerted to transactions and security activity while you’re overseas. They’re helpful for when you’re overseas and sent a One Time Password (OTP) to your phone. Especially if you’re using an overseas SIM and can’t get an SMS authorisation message from us.
Set up alerts
Set up NAB Alerts and Quick Balances to help you stay in control of your accounts while you’re away and avoid overdrawing your accounts.
Please note: Access to NAB’s online banking services (the NAB app and internet banking) is blocked in some countries due to international sanctions. Make sure to check the locations to see if you’ll be impacted while you’re away.
2. Get your cards travel-ready
Check your card expiry
We’ll automatically send you a replacement card before your current one expires. If you’re travelling and need it sooner, order an early replacement by calling us from the NAB app or 13 22 65.
Check your available credit limit
If using a NAB credit card, make sure to check your available credit limit on your card, to ensure you have sufficient funds for your travel needs.
Do you remember your PIN?
In some countries, you may also need a PIN instead of a signature to authorise credit card transactions. You can view or change your PIN in the NAB app.
Check international fees
Knowing how your cards international transaction fees work can help you avoid unexpected fees on overseas and online purchases.

You can review and change your limits using NAB Internet Banking.
Set up automatic payments for recurring bills
Setting up automatic payments means your recurring bills are automatically taken care of while you’re away.
You can set up a recurring scheduled payment from a NAB account or set up a regular bill payment using BPAY.
Exchange currency before travelling
Having some foreign currency before you leave can be useful, particularly for late arrivals or remote travel.
Taking a mix of cash and cards and dividing it into multiple secure locations will give you backup options if something is lost or stolen.
You can also use NAB’s foreign currency tool to check indicative exchange rates and plan your spending.
4. Take precautions
Organise travel insurance
Some eligible NAB cards include complimentary travel insurance.
Check if your card is eligible and what’s covered before you travel in case you need additional coverage for your specific needs.
Save important contacts
Save any emergency contacts and other relevant numbers so that you have contact options when overseas.
You can contact us toll-free from some countries and Visa has emergency assistance in case you lose your card and need an urgent replacement or emergency cash.
Check trusted advice
Get country specific travel advice before you travel so you’re aware of the risks and precautions you can take to stay safe on your trip.
Learn how to keep your devices safe
Write down your phone’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number and keep it separate from your device. It can help your mobile provider block the phone if it is stolen and means that no one can use the device even if they insert another SIM card from another carrier.
The fastest way to check your IMEI number is to open your phone’s dialler and dial *#06. The 15-digit number will instantly appear on your screen.
