How to close a Visa Debit card - NAB

What to do before you close your card

Change or cancel your recurring payments

  • If you have recurring payments, you’ll need to talk to the merchant to change them to a different card or stop them. Depending on how the merchant charges your card, these transactions may still be processed after your card is closed.
  • A recurring payment is an agreement you have made directly with a merchant, authorising a payment to be paid from your debit card by giving them your card number, expiry date and CVV number. Examples of a recurring payment include gym memberships and subscription services (e.g. Netflix, News Corp, etc.).

Order a new debit card to access a linked account

  • If you don’t have an alternative Visa Debit card, you may need to order a new one to continue to access your funds. You can apply online or visit your nearest branch.

After you’ve successfully closed your Visa Debit card

  • Destroy your physical card immediately by cutting it in half, making sure you cut through the card number, magnetic strip and microchip.
  • Remove the card from your digital wallet, as you’ll be no longer be able to use it.
  • Check that all recurring payments linked to your card have been changed or cancelled.
