Account Balances | Current and Available Balance - NAB
Why it matters
Knowing the difference between your current balance and available balance is essential. It helps you manage your money confidently, avoid unexpected overdrafts, and make informed decisions about your spending.
Here we explain the difference between a current and an available balance that you may see in NAB Internet Banking, the NAB app or Quick Balances
What is my ‘current balance’?
Your current balance is the total amount of money in your account, including transactions that have not yet been finalised. This may reflect payments or withdrawals you have made, but which are still being processed. As a result, your current balance may not always represent funds you can spend immediately.
What is my ‘available balance’?
Your available balance shows the money you can use right now. It accounts for all pending transactions, providing a clear picture of what is genuinely accessible for spending. Relying on your available balance helps you avoid spending money that is already earmarked for outgoing payments.
What are pending transactions?
Pending transactions are payments or withdrawals that have been initiated but are not yet fully processed. These will instantly reduce your available balance, even though they may still appear in your current balance until they clear. Always check your available balance for the most accurate amount you can spend.
Tips to avoid overdrawing your account
- Always refer to your available balance before making purchases or withdrawals.
- Keep an eye on any payments or transfers you have set up, as these may impact your available funds.
- Review your account regularly for pending transactions to ensure you don’t accidentally spend more than you have.
- If you see a transaction on your account that doesn’t look right, and you’ve tried to contact the merchant or recipient without being able to resolve the issue, you might be able to lodge a dispute.
